@OW_Panthers Baseball rallies past Drew to claim 5-3 win

Old Westbury returns to Skyline Conference action Friday (Apr. 17) at Yeshiva

Gameday Program

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) -  SUNY Old Westbury baseball picked up a 5-3 non-conference win at home over the Drew Rangers Tuesday afternoon from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  With the win, the Panthers advance to 13-8 on the season while Drew moved to 10-17.

Drew starting right-hander Leo Ruiz (3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 2 K) dealt with control issues in the opening inning, handing out two walks, one hit batsman and a wild pitch.  Dean Sheridan then broke the scoring ice with a single to advance home Jonathan Pagan for the 1-0 Panther advantage.

The Rangers tied the game in the second after Mike DiDonato worked a bases loaded walk to score Bobby Miskura (2-for-4, 2 R, BB) to make it a 1-1 game.  Old Westbury starting right-hander Kevin Specht (2.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 1 K) allowed three walks and one wild pitch in the frame.

Specht cruised through his first two-batters faced in the third before allowing a double and two singles to conclude his outing.  Catcher Carlos Balmaceda misplayed right-handed reliever Justin Mize's pitch that allowed Miskura to score off a passed ball for a 2-1 Ranger lead.

Ruiz walked Jacob Coners (3-for-3, 2 R, BB, 2 SB) in the fourth, which caused right-handed reliever Ryan Fitzpatrick (0-3, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) to take over.  Coners then stole second and advanced to third off a balk before Balmaceda's sacrifice fly tied the game (2-2).

Mize ran into trouble in the fifth, giving up a leadoff single and three-straight walks to score Al Krause for the go ahead run (3-2).

Old Westbury answered in the sixth with a single run off Fitzpatrick to tie the game at three.  Coners stroked a one-out single and advanced to second off Balmaceda's walk before sliding into third off a double steal.  Catcher Robert Auletti's passed ball allowed Coners to score from third for Old Westbury's third run.

Following a one-out walk to Sheridan in the seventh, Old Westbury executed a hit-and-run to perfection off Robert Crocitto's single to move Sheridan to third.  Matthew Taurisani then lifted a sacrifice fly out to center to score Sheridan for the game-winning run off Fitzpatrick.  Nick Yip followed with a pinch-hit single to score Joemar Wilson from second to make it a 5-3 game.

Southpaw Nick Schoen (2-2) fanned three batters in 2.2 innings of one-hit ball to earn Old Westbury's win.  Vinny Bieniek closed the door in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

Eddie Hernandez (1-for-3, 2 BB, SB) singled in the bottom of the eighth to extend his hitting to eight games.
