@OW_Panthers Women’s Lacrosse powers past Centenary for record-setting win

Old Westbury recorded its program-best fourth win of the season with Wednesday’s 19-8 road decision

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse posted a 19-8 non-conference road win Wednesday afternoon over the Centenary Cyclones from J.E. Reeves Jr. Field in Hackettstown, New Jersey.  With the win, Old Westbury (4-9) recorded its program-best fourth victory of the season, while sending Centenary to 3-9.

Ashley Gugliuzzo (4-9), now Old Westbury's all-time wins leader, made five saves to claim her second-straight victory.  Courtney Gallagher, Emily Powell and Sara Bey each contributed four goals and one assist to lead the Panthers' offense.  Gallagher added three caused turnovers and a career-best seven ground balls, while racking up seven (tied career-high) of Old Westbury's single-game record 20 draw controls.  Powell finished with eight draw controls to tie Old Westbury's single-game record.

Powell broke the scoring ice 26 seconds into play with her 22nd goal of the year to put the Panthers ahead early.  Gallagher, Bey and Halle Johnson each followed with goals to open the Panthers' lead to 4-0 with 25:55 remaining.  Centenary outscored the Panthers 3-2 from 25:12 to 16:04 to slice the deficit in half, 6-3.  Danielle Weir answered with back-to-back goals to make it 8-3 with 14:37 remaining.  Shijuan Williams ripped home the game-winning goal at 11:47 off a feed from Bey to spark a 3-0 run.  Gallagher capped the run with her third goal of the game at the 5:44 mark for her program-best ninth career hat trick.  Bey would then tack on two more goals to register her eighth-career hat trick to send the Panthers into the half with a 13-5 lead.

Powell opened the second-half scoring books 31 seconds in for her third goal of the game (team-leading sixth hat trick).  Imani Blake netted a pair of goals during a 4-0 Panther run to stretch the lead to 12 (18-6) with 17:55 showing on the second-half clock.  Gallagher closed out the scoring for Old Westbury with 2:50 left before Centenary's Abby Voelkner scored her third goal of the game at 1:32 for the 19-8 final.

Hannah Fisher (3-9) stopped 11 shots in defeat for Centenary.

In the end, Old Westbury held the advantage in shots (35-21), draw controls (20-9) and caused turnovers (6-5) while Centenary earned the edge in ground balls (23-14).
