OLD WESTBURY, NY - (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury baseball extended its winning streak to 11 games after topping the visiting United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners, 6-1, Tuesday evening in non-conference action from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. No. 2 Old Westbury (22-8) will now take on No. 3 Farmingdale State (16-14) in the opening round of Friday's Skyline Conference Championship Tournament at 4 p.m. from Gregg Alfano Field in Patchogue, New York.

Merchant Marine (13-19) jumped ahead early with a two-out RBI double by Quinn Fleming off Old Westbury starting right-hander Justin Mize in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers threatened in the home half of the first when Michael Cardino advanced to third off a two-base failed pick-off attempt by USMMA starting right-hander Kyle Clausen (1-3, 7.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K). Clausen bounced back to retire Dean Sheridan (2-for-4, 2B, RBI, R) on strikes to strand Cardino at third.

Old Westbury evened the score in the fourth inning when Clausen hit Carlos Balmaceda with the bases loaded to score Sheridan for the game-tying run. Sheridan extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single to lead off the frame.

Old Westbury took the lead in the fifth with Sheridan's two-out double to score Matthew Taurisani to give the Panthers a 2-1 advantage.

Later in the seventh inning, right-handed reliever Tyler Kapela stranded two runners in scoring position after retiring back-to-back Mariners on strikes to escape out the jam.

Following a one-out walk to Jonathan Pagan, Tommy Ziegen (2-for-3, R, BB) slapped a single through the right side to place runners at the corners. Pinch hitter Nick Yip then reached base on a fielder's choice to score Pagan for a 3-1 lead off right-handed reliever Josh Ellington. Two batters later, Joey Walsh (1-for-4, 2 RBI, R, SB) delivered a two-run single to make it a 5-1 game before scoring off Jacob Coners' (2-for-5, RBI, SB) single to cap the scoring. Walsh has now reached base safely in 19-straight games.

Old Westbury's relievers combined to toss seven innings of two-hit shutout ball, striking out nine while walking three. Right hander Vinny Bieniek (2-0, 1 IP, 2 K) pitched the fifth inning to earn the win and righty Nick Dorcean (2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K) fanned five batters to close out the final two innings to collect his first-career save.
