@OW_Panthers Softball sweeps Baruch

Old Westbury looks to carry the momentum into Saturday’s home doubleheader versus Hunter

NEW YORK (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury softball claimed 4-1 and 13-3 non-conference victories Friday afternoon to sweep the Baruch Bearcats from Randall's Island.  With the sweep, Old Westbury improves to 3-9 on the season while sending Baruch's record to 0-6.

Game One: Old Westbury 4, Baruch 1
Old Westbury broke the scoring ice in the second inning when Nicole DeCola and Delana Murray each walked to reach base.  With two outs, Murray stole second, which allowed DeCola to cross home plate for the game's initial run off a throwing error by pitcher Nicole Chicon (0-2, 7 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 10 BB, 1 K).

Amanda Fucci connected on her first-career home run in the third inning to put Old Westbury up 2-0 for the game-winning run.  Four batters later, Alicia Redguard drew a bases loaded walk to force home Corrine Protasiewicz (1-for-2, BB) for a 3-0 lead.

Baruch pushed its lone run across the plate in the sixth off a sacrifice bunt that scored Kristen Podlovits (2-for-3, 2B) for the lone Bearcat tally.

Old Westbury closed out the scoring in the seventh inning with Protasiewicz advancing home off Murray's single for the 4-1 final.

Gabriella Valdes (2-for-3, BB, SB) registered her third multi-hit game of season to pace the Panthers.

Fucci (1-6) fanned a career-best nine batters in a complete game effort to claim her first-career win.  She allowed one run on four hits and two walks.

Game Two: Old Westbury 13, Baruch 3 (5 Inn.)
Old Westbury took an early 6-0 lead in the first inning after compiling five hits, highlighted by RBI singles by Protasiewicz (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB) and Murray, and a three-run double by Katie Rizzo (2-for-2, 3 RBI, R, BB) to score the eventual game-winning run.

Baruch answered in the home half of the first with Victoria Dolan's (3-for-3, 2 R) RBI double followed by a run-scoring single by Jacqueline Gioia (2-for-2, BB) to make it a 6-2 game.

Fucci (3-for-3, 2 R, BB) responded in the second with a solo home run to put the Panthers up 7-2.  Protasiewicz followed with a single to record her 100th career hit.

Old Westbury scored five more runs in the third and one more in the fifth for a 13-2 lead.  Baruch tacked on one in the fifth off Kimberly Rodriguez's RBI single to close out the scoring.

DeCola (2-3, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) pitched Old Westbury to the game two win while Gioia (0-4, 5 IP, 14 H, 13 R, 9 ER, 3 BB, 1 K) was dealt Baruch's loss.

Valdes (1-for-4, 2 R, RBI) tied her career-best hitting streak of six games with a third inning single.  Brittany Chernoff collected three hits and scored three runs while Otilia Bernal (1-for-4, RBI) scored twice.
