@OW_Panthers Women’s Volleyball sweeps Medgar Evers

Old Westbury opens Skyline Conference play Saturday (Sept. 26) with two matches at Farmingdale State

BROOKLYN, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball defeated the Medgar Evers Cougars, 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-13), on Tuesday evening in non-conference road action from Cougars Cave.

In what was a seesaw first set that featured six lead changes, Old Westbury (2-3) pulled away from a 24-all tie after Sofia Goris nailed down a kill off a feed from Chelsey Hoffman to make it a 25-24 game.  Shanayia Lloyd then shut the door with a block to secure the opening set for the Panthers.

In the second set, Old Westbury used a 9-0 run to take a 16-6 lead, and later closed out the set with nine unanswered points to earn the win.

Medgar Evers (0-10) jumped ahead to a 3-1 advantage in the third stanza for its first lead since going up 21-20 in the opening set.  Old Westbury would later use a key 12-1 run to close out the set.

Goris led all players with five aces (tied career high) to pace Old Westbury to an 8-5 edge.  The Panthers were keyed by five kills from Rayn Brown in addition to her 100th career ace in the first set.  Hoffman added four kills and captained the offense with 10 assists.  Olivia O'Keefe led the Panther defense with eight digs, while Lloyd followed with five.

Kalifa Roberts racked up a match-high 13 kills and hit .114 in 35 swings to pace the Cougars.  AnnMarie Benberry directed the offense with a match-high 12 assists.

Old Westbury hit -.037 to -.101 for Medgar Evers. Roberts had 11 digs to lead Medgar Evers to a 22-20 edge.
