Old Westbury returns home for Saturday’s (Dec. 3) Toys for Tots game versus St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) in a rematch of the 2016 Skyline Conference Championship

PATCHOGUE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball opened Skyline Conference play Thursday evening with a 75-67 setback on the road to the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles (1-4, 1-0 Skyline) inside Danzi Center.

Stephon Odle sank a jumper 23 seconds in to give Old Westbury (0-5, 0-1 Skyline) the early advantage.  The Panthers built their lead to as many as six while leading throughout the opening 12:04.  Trailing 17-11, St. Joseph's used an 11-3 run from 9:17 to 5:54 to take a 22-20 lead.    Old Westbury outscored the Golden Eagles 14-9 in the final 5:54 to take a 34-31 lead into the half while shooting 52 percent from the field.

Isaiah Moore's triple at 16:27 capped a 10-2 run as St. Joseph's jumped out to a 41-36 second-half lead. Old Westbury scored six-straight points to go up 42-41.  Down 52-48, Jamail Stanley netted the Panthers' next six points to tie the game at 54 with 8:39 showing on the second-half clock.  St. Joseph's responded with an 11-2 run from 7:07 to 4:18 for a nine-point cushion (65-56).  Moments later, Joe Santoro's three-point play pushed the Golden Eagles' lead to 10 (69-59) with 2:52 remaining.  Stanley scored all 17 of Old Westbury's points during a 10:41 stretch before Bradley Eugene's layup with 23 seconds left closed the scoring books. 

Stanley led all scorers with a career-high 33 points (9-of-18 FG, 15-of-17 FT) while totaling 13 rebounds, five blocks (career-high) and two steals to produce his third-straight double-double (16th career).  Lylle Ryals followed with 13 points while Eugene added eight. 

Fernando Vasquez totaled 20 points (7-of-10 FG, 3-of-4 3FG) to lead three other Golden Eagles in double-digit scoring.  Andy Laurent registered 15 points and a game-high seven assists and five steals.    

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from the field, 15 percent (3-of-20) from three-point range and 90 percent (18-of-20) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, St. Joseph's hit on 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the floor, 40 percent (10-of-25) from beyond the arc and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 38-26, while scoring 16 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds.  St. Joseph's held the advantage in steals (13-6) and assists (15-11). 
 
ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE (BROOKLYN) BEARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns home Saturday (Dec. 3) for a rematch of the 2016 Skyline Conference Championship game against the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (1-4, 0-1 Skyline) at 12 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center. 
 
On Saturday, Old Westbury's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will once again join forces with the United States Marine Corps for the sixth-consecutive year to host its first of three Toys for Tots games.  Fans are invited to donate new, unwrapped toys that will later be distributed to children in need.  Admission is $3 or a new, unwrapped toy, and students are free with school ID.  Fans can drop donations in the marked "Toys for Tots" bin at the entrance to Clark Athletic Center.
