Strong first-half sends @OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball past Saint Elizabeth, 65-45

Old Westbury improved to 6-2 on the season with Tuesday’s non-conference road win

MORRISTOWN, NJ --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball rolled past the College of Saint Elizabeth Eagles (4-4) Tuesday with a 65-45 non-conference road win in Morristown, New Jersey. 

The Panthers (6-2) missed on their first five shots from the field before Tori Bellings' layup 1:09 gave Old Westbury the early 2-0 lead.  Old Westbury started off strong defensively by causing five Saint Elizabeth turnovers before the Eagles got on the board with 5:53 remaining in the first period.  Saint Elizabeth then took its largest lead of the game as Deja Ingram scored five-straight points to make it a 7-2 game.  Trailing 9-7 heading into the second period, a layup by Ruth Vargas at 9:04 gave the Panthers the lead for good, 11-10.  Imani Lariosa would later sink a pair of free-throws with 3:29 left to spark an 18-3 run to close out the half as Old Westbury took a 15-point lead (36-21) lead into intermission.

Old Westbury maintained a double-digit lead for the final 7:01 as Jasmine Robinson's 3-pointer made it a 50-39 game.  Keyia Brown-Smalls settled the scoring with a pair of free-throws to extend the Panthers' lead to a game-high 20 points with 19 seconds remaining.

Vargas led Old Westbury to victory with 16 points (6-of-7 FT), seven rebounds (four offensive), three steals and two assists.  Tori Bellings and Monique Joseph both followed with 10 points.  Tori Bellings also collected eight rebounds (six offensive), four assists and three steals while Joseph contributed seven rebounds, five steals (career-high) and four assists.  Charlotte Renker pulled-down a game-high 11 boards.  Robinson and Tyra Bellings also chipped in with three steals apiece. 

Jasmine Poole paced Saint Elizabeth with 16 points and four steals.  Danesha Triplett added 10 points and a team-best seven rebounds. 
 
In the end, Old Westbury connected on 31.4 percent (22-of-70) from the field, 12.5 percent (1-of-8) from three-point range and 58.8 percent (20-of-34) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Saint Elizabeth hit on 32.7 percent (17-of-52) from the floor, 14.3 percent (1-of-7) from beyond the arc and 38.5 percent (10-of-26) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 66-47, while scoring 19 second-chance points off a season-best 38 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers also held the advantage in steals (21-17), blocks (3-1), assists (14-9) and points off turnovers after converting 38 Eagle miscues into 32 points. 

YORK COLLEGE CARDINALS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels to Jamaica, New York next Friday (Dec. 30) for a non-conference showdown against the York College Cardinals at 3 p.m. inside St. Joseph's Gymnasium.
