@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball closes out calendar year against No. 9 Christopher Newport

Old Westbury battled No. 9 Christopher Newport in the Captains Shootout championship game Thursday evening

NEWPORT NEWS, VA --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball advanced to the Captains Shootout championship game Thursday evening before falling 86-41 to the host No. 9 Christopher Newport University Captains (8-2) in Newport News, Virginia.

After misfiring on seven attempts from the floor to open the game, Old Westbury (4-6) tied the game (2-2) with a layup by Lylle Ryals 3:57 in.  Christopher Newport then used a 10-0 run to go up 12-2 before Preston Powell's jumper sliced the Panthers' deficit to single digits (12-4) with 11:47 showing on the first-half clock.  The Captains answered with a 12-3 spurt to take a 17-point lead (24-17), and later closed out the final 1:57 with an 8-0 run to take a 40-13 advantage into intermission. 

Christopher Newport's lead ballooned to as many as 50 points (86-36) with 1:36 remaining in the game. 

Powell led Old Westbury with 11 points and three steals.  Jamail Stanley followed with 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks while Bradley Eugene tied a career-high with four blocks.  Stanley totaled 27 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks in two games to land on the all-tournament team.  
Terrin Roland added two steals off the bench. 

Tim Daly and Luther Gibbs both scored 11 points to pace the Captains to victory. 

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 24.6 percent (15-of-61) from the field, 9.1 percent (1-of-11) from three-point range and 50 percent (10-of-20) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Christopher Newport hit on 50.9 percent (29-of-57) from the floor, 54.2 percent (13-of-24) from beyond the arc and 68.2 percent (15-of-22) from the charity stripe.  Christopher Newport won the boards battle, 54-31, scoring 20 second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers held the advantage in blocks (8-6) and steals (7-5) as Christopher Newport converted 13 Old Westbury turnovers into 20 points.  
 
COLLEGE OF MOUNT SAINT VINCENT DOLPHINS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury opens 2017 at home next Thursday (Jan. 5) with a Skyline Conference showdown against the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins at 6 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.
