@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball tops CMSV to advance to Saturday’s Skyline Conference Championship game

No. 3 Old Westbury will travel Saturday to take on No. 1 Sage at 1 p.m.

(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) No. 3 SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball provided the upset Thursday evening by claiming an 82-69 Skyline Conference Championship semifinal road win over the second-seeded No. 2 Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (17-9) inside Peter Jay Sharp Center.  With the win, Old Westbury (22-5) plays in its first-ever Skyline Conference Championship game, and will battle the top-seeded Sage Gators Saturday at 1 p.m. from Kahl Gymnasium in Albany, New York.

With the Dolphins leading 9-8 early on, Kaitlin McGeown's jumper started Mount Saint Vincent's 7-0 run with 4:34 left in the first period.  Ruth Vargas' jumper with 49 seconds remaining trimmed Old Westbury's deficit to seven (19-12) heading into the second quarter.  The second quarter proved to be all Old Westbury as Jasmine Robinson's free throw sparked a 9-2 run to bring the Panthers within two at 3:32.  Old Westbury closed out the final minute of first-half play with an 8-0 run as Raven Pentz landed a pair of 3-pointers to give the Panthers a 36-33 advantage at intermission.
 
Robinson's jumper opened the third-quarter scoring to spark a 6-0 Panther run that extended the lead to nine (42-33).  Mount Saint Vincent would the gap to four points (55-51) as Kristen Merrell dropped in a layup with 9:11 left in the fourth.  Old Westbury answered later in the quarter with a 10-2 run to extend its lead to a game-high 15 points with 39 seconds left.

Leading the way for the Panthers was Robinson, who finished paced the squad with 16 points (8-of-11 FT) to go along with five assists and three steals.  Monique Joseph totaled 11 points (5-of-7 FG) and seven rebounds while Vargas (5-of-7 FG) chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.  Pentz added 10 points (3-of-6 3FG) and four rebounds as Cyrstal Barnes chipped in with 12 rebounds and eight points.
 
Christina Barone poured in a game-high 22 points as Merrell followed with 15 points.
 
In the end, Old Westbury shot 45.1 percent (32-of-71) from the field, 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from 3-point territory and 59.1 percent (13-of-22) at the free-throw line. By comparison, Mount Saint Vincent hit on 40.6 percent (26-of-64) from the floor, 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from the beyond the arc and 64.7 percent (11-of-17) at the stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 52-34, and scored 15 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers held the edge in blocks (4-2), points in the paint (40-28) and fast-break points (8-6) while converting 17 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers into 24 points.
