@OW_Panthers Baseball takes down No. 5 Kean

Old Westbury used timely hitting and retired 26-straight batters to close out the game to record its first win of the season

UNION, NJ ---Ā (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com)Ā SUNY Old Westbury baseball (1-1) claimed its first win of the 2016 campaign with a 4-1 road victory over the No. 5 Kean Cougars (1-3) Friday afternoon inside Jim Hynes '63 Stadium.Ā  Ā

Jesse Russo drew a leadoff walk and advanced two bases on a failed pickoff before Dean Sheridan slapped an infield grounder to drive in the game's initial run for Old Westbury's first-inning lead.Ā

Kean answered in the bottom of the first with a RBI single by Andy Lopez to score Michael Kendall from third.

After allowing three singles in the first inning, Old Westbury starterĀ Jeremy Charles retired the side in frames 2-7 to finish with nine strikeouts (one walk) in seven innings of work.Ā  Reliever Vinny Caputo fanned two in the eighth to set up Ryan Mordecai for his first save with a perfect ninth as Old Westbury retired the final 26-straight batters.Ā

Michael Cardino singled and stole second to lead off the Panthers fourth.Ā  Two batters later, Cardino crossed the plate to double Old Westbury's advantage off a dropped fly by right fielder Ryan Kelley.Ā  Carlos Balmaceda (2-of-3, RBI) followed with a sacrifice fly to score Paul Rapoli to make it a 3-1 game.

Old Westbury took a 4-1 lead in the eighth as Cardino grounded out to score Kevin Lao.Ā  Lao led off the frame with a single and stole second before Dean Sheridan's single advanced him to third.Ā Ā

Ā
Kean starter Mike Occhi (0-1) surrendered three unearned runs in 3.2 innings to take the loss.
