@OW_Panthers Baseball tangles with New Jersey City in home opener

Jeremy Charles fanned seven batters in seven innings

Gameday Program

OLD WESTBURY, NYĀ ---Ā
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com)Ā SUNY Old Westbury baseball dropped its home opener Friday afternoon by the count of 5-1 to the New Jersey City Gothic Knights (7-3).

Old Westbury (9-5) threatened in the third inning with Paul Rapoli's leadoff single that put Old Westbury in the hit column.Ā  Following a double-play ball hit by Tyler Roberts, Joey Walsh (2-for-3, SB) reached on a bunt single, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch.Ā  New Jersey City starter Ray Liguori (1-0, 6 H, R, BB, 10 K) struck out Jesse Russo to strand one of four Panthers on the day to escape out of the jam.

Panther starter Jeremy Charles (2-2, 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, BB, 7 K) cruised until the sixth, when he surrendered a RBI single to Joe Coutinho for the Gothic Knights' 1-0 lead.Ā  Despite giving up the RBI single, Charles recorded three of his seven strikeouts on the day in the sixth.Ā

New Jersey City scored in the seventh on a sacrifice bunt to push CJ Pulcine (3-for-4, RBI, R) across home plate for the game-winning run to end Charles' outing.Ā

Panther reliever Nick Dorcean gave up one run in the eighth before Ryan Mordecai was charged with two in the ninth.Ā

Tommy Ziegen (1-for-4) extended his hitting streak to eight games with a one-out double in the ninth.Ā  Two batters later, Dean Sheridan (1-for-4, RBI) singled home Ziegen for Old Westbury's lone run.Ā  With the single, Sheridan has now reached base safely in 13-straight games.Ā
