NEWBURGH, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY OId Westbury softball opened its 2016 season with a Skyline Conference road matchup against the Mount Saint Mary Knights Saturday afternoon in Newburgh, New York. The Knights claimed the sweep with 6-3 and 15-3 (5 Inn.) victories over the Panthers to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 6, Old Westbury 3
Kaite Skelly led off the third with a double to put Old Westbury in the hit column. Following a two-out single by Gabriella Valdes, Katie Rizzo slapped a RBI single through the left side to score Skelly for the early lead. Valdes would then advance home on a muffed throw by second baseman Shannon Sommer to double Old Westbury's advantage before Amanda Fucci doubled home Rizzo for the 3-0 lead.

Mount Saint Mary answered with five runs in the fifth inning as Cindy Connoly's (2-for-4, 2 RBI, R) double drove in two Knights to tie the game. Three batters later, Fucci's (0-1, 4.1 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 3 K) wild pitch scored Connoly for what proved to be the game-winning run. Connoly (1-0) fanned six batters to pick up the win with three innings of one-hit shutout relief.

Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 15, Old Westbury 3 (5 Inn.)
Fucci (2-for-2, 2 HR) belted a two-out home run to give Old Westbury a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Knights answered with back-to-back RBI singles by Connoly and Courtney Barbara for a 2-1 lead on Panther starter Nicole DeCola (0-1, 1 IP, 10 H, 9 R, 5 ER).

Mount Saint Mary scored eight runs in the second inning to put the game away. Sabrina Gordek (2-for-3, RBI, R) opened the frame with a RBI double and then scored the game-winning run by advancing home as Sommer (2-for-3, 2 R) stole second.

Down 12-1, Fucci lifted her second solo shot of the day to make it a 10-run game in the fourth.

Brittany Chernoff led off the fifth with a walk, and three batters later crossed home plate to close out the scoring with Delana Murray's infield grounder that settled the score at 15-3.

Colleen Dunn (1-0, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) went the distance to earn the Knights' win.

MOUNT SAINT VINCENT DOLPHINS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains on the road Sunday (Mar. 20) for a Skyline Conference doubleheader against the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins at 12 p.m. from Randall's Island Field No. 12.
