@OW_Panthers Baseball battles Otterbein

Old Westbury continued play Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic against Otterbein

FORT MYERS, FLĀ ---Ā (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com)Ā SUNY Old Westbury baseball dropped a 3-1 non-conference battle that was decided in the ninth inning Wednesday morning versus the Otterbein Cardinals (5-0) from Player Development Complex in Fort Myers, Florida.

Old Westbury (4-2) starter Vinny Caputo (6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K) gave up a leadoff single to Taylor Hutchinson, who came around to score two batters later off Tyler Kent's sacrifice fly to center field for Otterbein's 1-0 lead.

Kevin Lao (2-for-4, R) led off the sixth with a triple.Ā  Two batters later, Michael Cardino answered with a RBI single to score Lao for Old Westbury's lone run.Ā 

Jeremy Charles fanned four batters in two innings of perfect relief of Caputo before Ryan Mordecai (0-1, 2 H, 2 R, BB, 2 K) surrendered a pair of runs in the ninth inning.Ā  Mark Walton (2-for-3, R, BB) tripled to open the inning, and advanced home off two wild pitches for the game-winning run.Ā  Three batters later, Otterbein added an insurance run off a wild pitch that scored J.C. Gibson for the 3-1 final.Ā  Ā 

Jesse Russo collected a double and went 4-for-5 at the plateĀ to lead the Panthers offensively.

Caleb Norton (1-0) fanned four batters in two innings of scoreless ball to pick up Otterbein's win.
