OLD WESTBURY, NY ---
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury softball opened its home schedule Thursday with 9-1 and 9-0 non-conference victories over the York Cardinals at Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.

Game 1: Old Westbury 9, York 1
(5 Inn.)
Old Westbury (2-4) put together a six-run first inning to take control of the game.  Gabriella Valdes (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI) led off with a single and advanced two bases on wild pitches before breaking the scoring ice off Katie Rizzo's (2-for-3, 2 RBI) RBI single.  Brittany Chernoff (2-for-2, 2 RBI) doubled the Panthers' advantage four batters later with a sacrifice fly to score Samantha Scharff (2-for-2, 2 R, RBI, BB) for a 2-0 lead.  York (0-8) committed a total of three errors in the first inning that led to four unearned runs.

Chernoff drilled a two-out double to score Scharff in the second inning for Old Westbury's 7-0 lead.

Old Westbury tacked on two more runs in the third with RBI singles by Rizzo and Scharff to extend the lead to nine.

Nicole Ovelheira's double in the fourth inning ended Amanda Fucci's no-hit bid.  Two batters later, Ovelheira scored York's lone run on a sacrifice hit by Nathy Reyes.

Fucci (1-2) tossed a one-hitter with five strikeouts in five innings of work to secure Old Westbury's first win of the year.

Darlene Judan (0-1, 4 IP, 9 H, 9 R, 4 ER, BB) was dealt York's loss.

Game 2: Old Westbury 9, York 0
(5 Inn.)
Valdes (1-for-2, 3 R, RBI, SB, BB) once again the set the table with a leadoff single.  Cardinal starter Chyla Guevara (0-2, 4 IP, 5 H, 9 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 2 K) dealt out back-to-back walks to load the bases for Kaite Skelly, who sacrificed home Valdes for Old Westbury's initial run.  Chernoff's (1-for-2, 3 RBI, BB) double then scored Rizzo (1-for-1, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB) and Scharff (1-for-2, 2 R, SB, BB) to make it a 3-0 game.

Valdes and Rizzo (1-for-1, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB) both scored unearned runs in the second inning to push Old Westbury's lead to five.

Old Westbury extended its lead in the fourth with unearned runs scored by Delana Murray and Valdes before Chernoff drew a bases loaded walk to score Scharff for an 8-0 lead.  Krysta Flareau settled the scoring with an infield grounder that platted home Fucci for the 9-0 final.

Nicole DeCola (1-2) fanned five batters and sat down 15-straight batters to record the perfect game for Old Westbury.
