@OW_Panthers Baseball dominant in John Jay sweep

Old Westbury opened its five-game homestand with a pair of non-conference wins

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- 
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball (24-13) collected 18-6 and 9-2 non-conference wins Wednesday over the John Jay Bloodhounds (11-25) from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.

Game 1: Old Westbury 18, John Jay 5
Dean Sheridan (3-for-4, 4 RBI, 2 R, SB) laced a RBI single to right to score Tommy Ziegen (1-for-2, 2 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 SB) for Old Westbury's 1-0 lead in the opening frame.  Two batters, Preston Zanon (1-for-2, 2 RBI, R, BB) doubled down the right field line to score Sheridan and Paul Rapoli (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB) for a 3-0 lead on Bloodhound starter Dave Schildwachter (0-2, 0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB). 

Panther starter Vinny Caputo (2-2, 4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 6 K) uncorked a wild pitch in the second inning to score Dylan Laudano (2-for-2, 2 R) for the Bloodhounds' initial run.  Charlee Rodriguez (2-for-4, RBI, R) followed with a RBI double to make it a 3-2 game.

Tyler Roberts (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 R) singled and scored on a balk to ignite Old Westbury's four-run second inning highlighted by RBI singles by Ziegen, Sheridan and Rapoli for the 7-2 lead.

Louis Sileno (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 R) crushed a solo home run to leadoff Old Westbury's fourth.  Ziegen lifted a sacrifice fly three batters later to score Jesse Russo (2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 R, 3 SB) for the 9-3 advantage.

John Jay scored twice in the fifth off reliever Danny D'Onofrio (S 1, 3 IP, 6 H, 2 R, ER, 1 K) before the Panthers put the game away with seven runs in the bottom of the frame and two more in the sixth for the 18-5 final.

Game 2: Old Westbury 9, John Jay 2 
Old Westbury produced four hits to score five runs to grab a second inning lead on John Jay starter Matthew Oppedisano (1-6, 2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, BB).  Casey Surdi (1-for-2, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB, SB) broke the scoring ice with a two-run single followed by Joe Boscia's RBI double and John Dell'Olio's run-scoring triple.  Russo added a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-0 game.   

Panther starter Tyler Kapela (5-1, 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, 4 K) tossed four scoreless innings to improve his career record to 12-4.

Boscia (2-for-2, 3 RBI, R) extended the Panthers' lead to six with a RBI single in the fifth.

John Jay scored two runs in the sixth off Panther reliever Ryan Mordecai to slice the deficit to four. 
 
Old Westbury tacked on three more runs in the sixth to take a 9-2 lead.  Boscia's sacrifice hit scored Carlos Balmaceda (1-for-1, 2B, R) before back-to-back RBI singles by Dell'Olio (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 3B, 2 R, SB) and Daniel Svenelid (1-for-1, RBI) settled the scoring.

SENIOR DAY VERSUS MOUNT SAINT VINCENT DOLPHINS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains at home Saturday (Apr. 30) for a 12 p.m. Skyline Conference Senior Day matchup against the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Pre-game festivities kick-off at 11:30 a.m. with the 2015 Skyline Conference Championship Banner Ceremony followed by the annual Senior Day Ceremony for Old Westbury's 2016 Baseball Senior Class of Vinny Caputo (2016), Jeremy Charles (2016), Tyler Kapela (2013-16) and Joey Walsh (2013-16).  Free ballpark food will be served from 11:30-1:30 p.m.
