Gameday Program

OLD WESTBURY, NY ---
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury softball (7-5, 3-5 Skyline) salvaged a Skyline Conference home split Saturday with a 16-14 game two victory over the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) Bears (5-8, 2-6 Skyline) after falling 7-5 in game one's extra inning affair.

Game 1: St. Joseph's 7, Old Westbury 5 (9 Inn.)
St. Joseph's jumped ahead with two runs in the first off Panther starter Amanda Fucci (3-3, 9 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 4 BB 7 K).

Fucci (2-for-4, 4 RBI, HR, 2B) answered with her bat in the bottom of the first, platting a two-run double off Bears' starter Theresa Armano (W 4-5, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) to score Gabriella Valdes (2-for-5, R) and Katie Rizzo (1-for-3, BB, 2 R) to make it a 2-2 game.

Old Westbury took a 4-2 lead in the third with a two-run homer over the right field fence by Fucci.

The Bears sliced the deficit in the fourth with Armano's RBI double to score Maria Gentile from first.

Gentile tied the game in the fifth with a RBI single that pushed Kristin Ferrigno (2-for-5, 2 R) across home plate.

With the game headed to extra frames, St. Joseph's scored three runs in the ninth to secure the win.  The Bears opened the inning with three-straight hits as Rossi singled home Erica Eddy (2-for-5, R) to make it a 5-4 game.  Three batters later, Fucci hit Armano with the pitch to score Ferrigno for what proved to be the game-winning run.

Old Westbury answered with Kristan Taylor's two-out single that scored Krysta Flareau after a fielding error by centerfielder Destiny Marino.  The Panthers continued to threaten with runners on the corner, but Armano induced a groundout by Valdes to escape out of the jam.

Game 2: Old Westbury 16, St. Joseph's 14
Old Westbury batted 20 Panthers during a 14-run first inning to take hold of the finale.  Bears' starter Jamilynn McGowan (1-3, 7 R, 3 H, 4 BB) did not record a single out before exiting the game with a 7-0 deficit.  Delana Murray (2-for-5, 2 R, RBI) scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 Panther lead before Samantha Scharff (3-for-3, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB) drew a walk to score Valdes to double the advantage.  Kaite Skelly (3-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 R) singled home Rizzo (1-for-3, 3 R, RBI, 2 BB) before Brittany Chernoff (1-for-4, HR, 4 RBI, BB) cleared the bases with a grand slam home run for Old Westbury's 7-0 lead.  Armano took over in the circle and surrendered seven more runs in the opening frame.

Panther starter Nicole DeCola (4-2, 4 IP, 8 R, ER, 8 H, BB, 3 K) tossed three shutout innings until the Bears platted three runs in the fourth to make it a 14-3 game.

RBI singles by Fucci (2-for-3, 3 RBI, R, BB) and Skelly increased Old Westbury's lead to 13 heading into the fifth, where the Bears scored six runs to prevent Old Westbury from claiming the run-rule victory.

The Bears' rally fell short in the seventh with five runs off Fucci (7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K), who recorded her first-career save with three innings of work.
