Old Westbury’s Skyline Conference Championship run ended in Wednesday’s semifinal round

PATCHOGUE, NY--- 
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com)  SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse made its first-ever Skyline Conference Championship appearance Wednesday evening on the road in the semifinals round.  The fourth-seeded Panthers fell 19-9 to the defending champions and top-seeded Golden Eagles (12-4) to conclude their 2016 campaign with a record of 6-12.  St. Joseph's advances to its third-straight championship game, and will host second-seeded Farmingdale State Saturday at 12 p.m.   
 
St. Joseph's jumped ahead 14 seconds in with Nicole Stoppelli's goal for the 1-0 lead.  Jessica Cordano then doubled the Golden Eagles' advantage 1:22 later for the 2-0 lead.  Old Westbury answered at 26:29 with a goal by Halle Johnson off a feed from Sara Bey to slice the Panthers' deficit in half.  Tricia Barrett's goal at 22:11 ignited a 6-0 Golden Eagle run before Courtney Gallagher found Natasha Treuman at 14:50 to interrupt the spurt.  The Golden Eagles replied 51 seconds later with Cordano's second goal of the game that sparked a 5-0 run to take a 13-2 lead into intermission. 

Gallagher opened the second-half scoring with goals at 29:42 and 28:11 to make it a 13-4 game.  Treuman continued the run with her 60th goal of the season at 27:34 followed by her third goal of the game to record her 10th hat trick of the season.  St. Joseph's responded at 22:22 with Heather Ferchland's third goal of the game.  Down 16-6, Johnson, Gabriella DiPierno and Bey rattled the back of the net to trim the deficit to seven.  The Golden Eagles closed out the scoring with a trio of goals during the final 9:36 to settle the 19-9 final.

Gallagher, who finished with four points (two goals, two assists), three ground balls and two caused turnovers, concludes her career as Old Westbury's all-time leader in goals (106), assists (40), points (146), shots (428), shots on goal (330), ground balls (137), draw controls (138) and caused turnovers (110).  Treuman added four draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls.  Danielle Weir totaled three draw controls while Bey and LaChaye Allen both controlled two draws.  Ashley Gugliuzzo (6-12) scooped three ground balls and made 10 stops in defeat for Old Westbury.  The Panthers graduate seniors Gallagher (2013-16), DiiPierno (2013-16) and Christine Fernandez (2014-16).

Lindsay Ramos (12-4) stopped seven shots to preserve the Golden Eagles' win.  Stoppelli recorded a game-high five goals while Ferchland followed with four goals, two assists, seven draw controls and five draw controls. 
 
Old Westbury finished 2016 with single-season team records in points (269), goals (196), assists (76), ground balls (392), draw controls (203), caused turnovers (243), man-up goals (10), man-down goals (5), free-position goals (39) and saves (159).
