Vargas’ double-double leads @OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball at Mount Saint Mary

Old Westbury returns home Saturday (Jan. 14) to continue its Skyline Conference slate versus St. Joseph’s (L.I.)

NEWBURGH, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball were unable to recover from an early deficit en route to a 57-48 Skyline Conference road setback to the Mount Saint Mary Knights (10-3, 6-1 Skyline) Wednesday evening in Newburgh, New York.  The loss snapped the Panthers' six-game winning streak as Old Westbury now stands at 10-3 on the season and 4-3 in conference play.
 
Mount Saint Mary opened the game with a 7-2 run capped by a 3-pointer by Jordyn Hellpap 3:09 in.  Old Westbury later used a 7-2 run of its own to tie the game before a triple by Maite Gritsko closed out the first period to give Mount Saint Mary a 12-9 lead.  The Knights opened the second quarter with a Jessica Rini jumper that sparked an 8-0 run to push the lead to double digits, 20-9.  With 4:06 left, Ruth Vargas dropped in a layup to slice the deficit to eight (25-17).  Kayla Cleare knocked down a pair of free-throws with 34 seconds remaining to send Mount Saint Mary into intermission with a 30-19 lead.
 
Old Westbury roared out of the second-half gates scoring five-unanswered points to pull within six (30-24) with 8:46 remaining.  Cleare's jumper pushed Mount Saint Mary's lead to a game-high 12 points (42-28) with 6:48 left before Old Westbury went on a 6-0 spurt to close out the quarter down eight (42-34).  Following a layup by Charlotte Renker at 8:56, Mount Saint Mary responded with six-straight points from Kerutis to push the lead back up to 12 (50-38) with 7:01 showing on the fourth-quarter clock.  Robinson scored four of Old Westbury's next six points to trim the deficit to six (54-48) before Kerutis scored three more points in the final 1:05 to send Mount Saint Mary to victory.
 
Vargas finished with game-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds (six offensive) to record her sixth double-double of the season.  She added four steals and one block to her statline.  Robinson followed with 10 points and five steals while Renker chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
 
Kerutis totaled 13 points (5-of-6 FT), four assists and two steals to pace Mount Saint Mary.  Hellpap contributed 12 points (4-of-11 3FG), four assists and three steals to the win while Rini scored 10 points.
 
In the end, Old Westbury connected on 28 percent (14-of-50) from the field and 66.7 percent (20-of-30) from the free-throw line while misfiring on all 11 attempts from three-point range.  By comparison, Mount Saint Mary hit on 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the floor, 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from beyond the arc and 90 percent (9-of-10) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 39-36, while Mount Saint Mary scored 18 second-chance points off 18 offensive rebounds.  Both teams registered 13 as the Knights held the advantage in assists (15-6) and scored 24 points off 24 Panther turnovers.
