@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball set for Skyline play after Medgar Evers thriller

Old Westbury opens Skyline Conference play Saturday (Dec. 2) at home versus St. Joseph’s College (L.I.)

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com--- SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball fell victim to a buzzer-beater at home Wednesday evening as the Medgar Evers Cougars (1-3) escaped Clark Athletic Center with a 79-77 non-conference victory over the host Panthers.  

Trailing 7-1 in the opening 2:26, Terrin Roland knocked down a triple to pull Old Westbury (1-1) within three (7-4) with 16:44 showing on the first half clock.  Medgar Evers put together a 6-2 run before Old Westbury countered with a 10-3 spurt to knot the game up at 16 with 13:44 remaining in the first half.  With the game tied at 23, Justin Sutton's three-pointer kickstarted a 15-4 Cougar run to push the lead to a first-half high 11 points (38-27) with 5:38 left.  Stanley Baker dropped in two points to ignite an 8-0 Panther run to slice the deficit to three (38-35).  Medgar Evers extended its lead back up to five in the final 2:26 to head into intermission with a 44-39 lead.

Julieon Boney scored four-straight points to give Old Westbury their second lead of the game (49-48) with 15:48 remaining in the second half.  Alan McDonald caught fire down the stretch as he scored 14-consecutive points from 10:16 to 4:36 to bring the Panthers within four (65-61). Roland converted a timely three-point play to cut the Cougars' lead to one (75-74) with 2:09 left.  With 33 seconds left, Boney's layup put the Panthers up by two (77-75) before the Cougars scored the final four points including Sutton's game-winning jumper as time expired to settle the 79-77 final.

McDonald put on a shooting clinic to finish with 22 points (6-of-9 FG, 9-of-9 FT) in leading Old Westbury.  Boney followed with 15 points (5-of-9 FG, 5-of-7 FT) and two blocks.  Roland dished out a game-high six assists to go along with his 12 points and three steals.  Baker totaled 11 points (5-of-8 FG), two blocks and two steals while Yancy Ulysse grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

Maurice Swaby II paced Medgar Evers with a game-high 24 points (10-of-21 FG) to go along with nine rebounds, five steals and two blocks.  Sutton followed with 22 points (3-of-6 3FG), seven rebounds and game-high seven steals.  Basheeru Camara and Hassan Jones added to the scoring total with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field, 22.7 percent (4-of-16) from 3-point range and 85.7 percent (18-of-21) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Medgar Evers hit 42.7 percent (32-of-75) from the floor, 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from beyond the arc and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the charity stripe.  Medgar Evers won the boards battle, 39-38, while Old Westbury scored 18 second-chance points off 10 offensive rebounds. Old Westbury held the edge in blocks (6-3), fastbreak points (12-8), points in the paint (40-34) and bench points (37-4). The Panthers also scored 11 points off 13 Cougar misuses.

ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE (L.I.) GOLDEN EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury continues its five-game homestand Saturday (Dec. 2) with a Toys for Tots Skyline Conference opener against the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles at 12 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.
