Second-half surge helps @OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball topple St. Joseph's (L.I.) for a 88-51 Skyline win

Old Westbury swept the season-series from St. Joseph’s to extend its winning streak to 10


PATCHOGUE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball used a strong second-half push to collect an 88-51 Skyline Conference road victory Tuesday evening over the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles (6-17, 5-11 Skyline) inside Danzi Center.  With the win, Old Westbury (20-3, 13-3 Skyline) extended its win streak to 10.

Trailing 2-1, Ruth Vargas' three-point play sparked an 11-1 run to give Old Westbury the 12-3 lead with 6:13 remaining in the opening quarter.  St. Joseph's responded with a 8-2 run in the final 2:13 after Danielle Gehring's free-throws trimmed the deficit to two, 22-20.  The Golden Eagles outscored Old Westbury 13-10 in the second stanza to take a 33-32 lead into intermission.

Vargas' lay-in opened the second-half scoring and gave the Panthers the lead for good (34-33) as Old Westbury outscored St. Joseph's 31-7 in the third quarter.  Vargas later added a layup with 6:33 left in the period to give Old Westbury a double-digit lead (49-38) for the final 16:33 of play.  Old Westbury pushed the lead past 20 points (59-38) for the remaining 11:37 off a pair of free-throws by Tyra Bellings.  The Panthers continued their strong play as Tyra Bellings connected from deep to kickstart a 15-0 run from 8:29 to 3:38 to make it a 35-point game (80-45).  Old Westbury closed out the final 2:29 with a 7-0 spurt to extend the lead to a game-high 37 points to settle the 88-51 final.

Vargas finished with 23 points (9-of-16 FG, 5-of-6 FT), nine rebounds (five offensive) and one steal.  Tori Bellings followed with 15 points (7-of-15 FG) and eight assists.  Monique Joseph contributed 14 points (6-of-11 FG), 10 rebounds and game-high nine steals (career-high) to register her eighth-career double-double.  Charlotte Renker chipped in 13 points (5-of-6 FT) and 10 rebounds (ninth-career double-double) while Bridgid McNeill added 12 points (6-of-6 FG) and 11 rebounds (fourth-career double-double).

Jackie Zizzo paced St. Joseph's with 23 points (8-of-14 FG, 7-of-12 3FG) while Indence poured in 10 points.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 47.3 percent (35-of-74) from the field, 25 percent (2-of-8) from 3-point range and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, St. Joseph's hit on 28.8 percent (17-of-59) from the floor, 29.4 percent (10-of-34) from beyond the arc and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 58-24, scoring 28 second-chance points off 25 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers held the advantage in blocks (3-1), steals (14-7) and assists (15-14), 25 scoring points off 20 Golden Eagle turnovers.
