@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball locks down No. 1 seed in upcoming Skyline Conference Championship

Old Westbury will defend its title as the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Championship after compiling an 87-48 win Saturday evening at Yeshiva

MANHATTAN --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball claimed the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2017 Skyline Conference Championship after defeating the Yeshiva University Maccabees (3-20, 1-17 Skyline), 87-48, on the road Saturday evening to head into the postseason with a 12-game winning streak.

Old Westbury (
22-3 / 15-3 Skyline) earned a share of the 2017 Skyline Conference Regular Season Championship with No. 2 Mount Saint Mary, and will now play host Thursday evening at 7 PM inside Clark Athletic Center versus the winner of Tuesday's first-round matchup between No. 4 Mount Saint Vincent/No. 5 Farmingdale State.  Admission for Thursday's semifinal-round showdown will be $5, and students with valid Old Westbury or Mount Saint Vincent/Farmingdale State school ID receive free admission.

Tori Bellings scored four of Old Westbury's opening eight points to jump ahead early and never look back as the Panthers grabbed an 8-0 lead 1:49 in.  Ruth Vargas' layup with 3:12 left in the opening quarter gave Old Westbury an 11-point lead (18-7).  Davida Warren later converted on a pair of free-throws with 3:03 left in the half to put Old Westbury ahead by double-digits (31-20) for the final 23:03 of play. 

Old Westbury took its first 20-point lead as Warren's layup capped a 14-4 run to make it a 21-point game (52-31) with 4:57 showing on the third-quarter clock.  Tyra Bellings' free-throw helped Old Westbury build its lead to 25 (61-36) with 45 seconds left in the stanza.  Tori Bellings then gave Old Westbury a 30-point lead (71-41) with two of her 12 second-half points.  The Panthers used a 16-3 run during a 5:25 stretch to extend the fourth-quarter lead to a game-high 41 points (85-44).
 
Tori Bellings poured in a career-best 18 points (7-of-10 FG) while dishing out six assists to pace Old Westbury to victory. Vargas followed with 16 points (7-of-16 FG), 12 rebounds, five steals and two blocks to register her 11th-career double-double.  Tyra Bellings also set a career-high with 16 points (6-of-8 FG, 2-of-3 3FG).  Jasmine Robinson chipped in with 10 points, four assists and three steals.  Warren added 11 rebounds and two steals off the bench.

Yeshiva was led by Tess Blaustein's 16-point effort (4-of-9 3FG).  Simee Rosner scored 15 points as Michal Alge followed with 10.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 51.5 percent (35--of-68) from the field, 37.5 percent (3-of-8) from 3-point range and 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Yeshiva hit on 22.1 percent (15-of-68) from the floor, 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from beyond the arc and 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 60-34, scoring just 10 second-chance points off 21 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers also held the advantage in blocks (5-3) and assists (25-11) while scoring 28 points off 26 Maccabee  turnovers.
