(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball used a strong second-half push Thursday evening on the road but were unable to erase a 24-point deficit after falling 84-77 to second-seeded The Sage Colleges Gators (17-9) in the 2017 Skyline Conference Championship semifinal round.  No. 3 Old Westbury (18-9) concluded the 2017 season with its fifth-straight conference semifinals appearance.   

Sage scored the game's opening eight points and took a double-digit lead with a 17-6 run capped by Rob Mills' layup with 16:04 left.  Preston Powell connected from deep to ignite a 7-2 run for Old Westbury to pull within six (22-16) with 11:52 left.  Davon Sylvester's free-throws helped the Gators respond with a 10-1 spurt to push their advantage back to double digits (32-17) with 8:24 showing on the first-half clock.  Jamail Stanley scored six of game's next nine points to trim Old Westbury's deficit to six (32-26) before Sage used a 20-7 run to close out the final seven minutes of the half to take a 52-33 lead into the break.

The Gators scored five-straight points to open the second half to extend its lead to a game-high 24 points with 18:43 remaining.  Stanley then converted a 3-point play to ignite Old Westbury's 14-4 run from 18:16 to 12:17 to pull within 14 points (61-47).  Moments later, Sage built its lead back to 19 points (68-49) before Luckens Victor tipped-in two points to start a 19-7 Panther run to make it a 76-71 game with 3:12 remaining.  Sage used a 5-0 run to hold a 10-point lead (81-71) over the next 1:07 to secure the victory despite Old Westbury making it an 82-77 game with 41 seconds left.   
 
Powell finished with a career-high 23 points (8-of-13 FG, 7-of-9 3FG) and a game-leading four steals.  Stanley followed with 18 points (7-of-14 FG), 12 rebounds, three steals and one block to record his 19th double-double of the season (32nd career).  Lylle Ryals contributed 19 points and nine rebounds while Stephon Odle dished out five assists and nabbed three steals.

Mills' 36 points (11-of-18 FG, 4-of-6 3FG) led all scorers.  Patterson chipped in 15 points while Thiago Conceicao grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 33.3 percent (23-of-69) from the field, 36.7 percent (11-of-30) from 3-point range and 69 percent (20-of-29) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Sage hit on 50 percent (27-of-54) from the floor, 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from beyond the arc and 56.1 percent (23-of-41) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 42-40, while scoring 19 second-chance points off 18 offensive rebounds.  Sage held the advantage in blocks (7-2) and assists (15-11) while Old Westbury finished with a +3 (18-15) edge in steals (18-15).  The Panthers also scored 24 points off 23 Gator turnovers.
