@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball battles Sage in second-straight Skyline title game

Old Westbury (23-4) will be tuned in for Monday’s NCAA Division III selection show at 2:30 p.m.

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Westbury women's basketball strong second-half surge was not enough to repeat as Skyline Conference champions as the No. 3 The Sage Colleges Gators (20-8) won the title game rematch on championship Saturday with a 72-66 road victory inside Clark Athletic Center.  With a record of 23-4 on the season, Old Westbury will be tuned in for Monday's NCAA Division III selection announcement for the field of 64 starting at 2:30 p.m. on www.ncaa.com.  

Kaitlyn Bowman broke the scoring ice for Sage 46 seconds in before Charlotte Renker laid-in two points for Old Westbury to knot the game 51 seconds later.  The Gators then put together a game-changing 17-4 run from 7:55 to 2:01 to take a 19-6 lead.  Trailing 23-10 with 9:42 left in the second quarter, Ruth Vargas' free-throw sparked a 7-2 Panther run make it an eight-point game (25-17) with 8:02 left.  Emily Parslow and Frankie Pearson combined for nine-unanswered points as Sage extend the lead to a game-high 17 points (34-17) with 5:57 showing on the second-quarter clock.  Vargas' layup ignited a 9-3 run over the final 5:40 to slice the deficit to 11 (37-26) heading into intermission.  

Facing a 14-points deficit (42-28), a layup by Monique Joseph ignited Old Westbury's 12-0 run from 6:32 to 3:14 to pull within two (42-40).  The Gators scored seven of the final nine points to close the  third quarter with a 49-43 lead.  Tori Bellings' layup with 7:39 left in the fourth quarter gave Old Westbury its first lead of the game (50-49).  The Panthers opened the stanza with a 9-0 to take a three-point lead (52-49) with 6:50 remaining.  Both teams traded leads over the next 5:27 until Parslow converted a pair of free-throws with 1:11 left to give the Gators the lead for good (64-63).  Jasmine Robinson sank a timely triple with 12 seconds left to make it a two-point game (68-66) before Pearson and Macie Holmes combined to hit 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in the final 10 seconds to secure the 2017 Skyline Conference Championship with the 72-66 final.

Robinson paced Old Westbury with 15 points (3-of-4 FT), four assists and one steal.  Joseph followed with 11 points (5-of-9 FG) and eight rebounds (three offensive).  Tori Bellings contributed nine points and four assists while Renker grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds (five offensive) to go with eight points (4-of-6 FG) and two blocks.  Vargas finished with eight points (4-of-6 FT), six rebounds and two steals as Bridgid McNeill added eight points and eight rebounds (tied season-high seven offensive rebounds) off the bench.

Pearson was named Skyline Conference Championship Most Outstanding Player after finishing with a game-high 27 points (6-of-10 3FG, 5-of-6 FT).  She added six rebounds and three steals to her impressive statline.  Parslow chipped in 14 points (7-of-8 FT) and a game-high nine assists.  Bowman added 10 points (4-of-8 FG), eight rebounds and four steals while Gessica Patregnani scored 10 points (4-of-7 FG, 2-of-4 3FG).

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 39.4 percent (22-of-66) from the field, 11.8 percent (2-of-17) from 3-point range and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Sage hit on 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the floor, 50 percent (10-of-20) from beyond the arc and 83.3 percent (20-of-24) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 47-31, while scoring 15 second-chance points off 20 offensive rebounds.  Sage finished with the advantage in steals (10-8) and assists (15-12) while Old Westbury held the edge in blocks (4-0).  The Panthers also scored 17 points off 20 Gator turnovers.
