@OW_Panthers Baseball powers past Lasell in slugfest, 24-16

Old Westbury produced 10 extra-base hits in day one at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

FORT MYERS, FL --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury pounded out 23 hits to open play Tuesday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a 24-16 non-conference win over the Lasell College Lasers (2-2) in Fort Myers, Florida.

Trailing 2-0 in the second inning, Paul Rapoli (2-for-5, 3 RBI, 3 R, BB) slapped a two-run homer off Lasell starter Daniel Petr (ND, 3 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) to tie the game.  Old Westbury (3-3) starter Daniel Aguilo (ND, 4 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 2 ER, BB, 7 K) fell victim to three errors in the second as Lasell took a 7-2 lead after scoring five unearned runs in the frame.

Old Westbury tied the game in the third with five runs on four hits as Louis Sileno got things started with a run-scoring double.  Gianni Carbone (2-for-5, 2 R) and Carlos Balmaceda (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 3 R, BB) also contributed RBI singles to make it a 7-7 game. 

Tommy Ziegen (4-for-6, 4 RBI, 4 R, BB, 2 SB) gave Old Westbury its first lead (8-7) of the day in the fourth inning with a solo shot over the left field fence for his eighth-career home run. 

Old Westbury scored three runs in the sixth before Lasell scored four times in the bottom of the inning off Panther reliever Trey Pizzutello (W, 2-2; 3 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, BB, 4 K) the plate four times in the bottom of the inning to tie the game (11-11). 

The Panthers scored eight runs on seven hits, including five extra base hits off Lasell relievers Justin Webb (L, 0-1; 0.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R), Patrick Colvin (0.1 IP, H, 3 E, 2 BB) and Mike Tacinelli (0.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R) to put the game away in the seventh.  Balmaceda doubled twice and Jesse Russo (4-for-7, 2 RBI, 3 R, 2 SB) produced a pair of RBI triples while David Hawley (3-for-7, 3 R, 2 SB) delivered the big blow in the frame with a two-run homer. 

Old Westbury crossed the plate four more times in the ninth as Ziegen slapped two-run RBI double and Dean Sheridan (2-for-6, 4 RBI, R, BB) drove in two off a single to settle the 24-16 final.
 
UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON ROYALS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury continues play Wednesday morning in Fort Myers, Florida at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Scranton Royals (7-4) at 9 a.m. from Lee County Player Development Complex No. 3.
