Old Westbury continues Skyline Conference play with Friday's home opener versus Yeshiva University

BRONXVILLE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury softball opened the 2017 campaign with 8-0 and 7-0 Skyline Conference road setbacks Thursday afternoon to the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (5-5, 2-0 Skyline) in Bronxville, New York.

Game 1: Sarah Lawrence 8, Old Westbury 0 (6 Innings)
Sarah Lawrence took the early lead with a leadoff home run by Taryn Penna off Panther starter Amanda Fucci (L, 0-1; 5.1 IP, 12 H, 8 R, 6 ER,2BB, 2 K) in the first inning.

Samantha Scharff singled to lead off the second inning off Gryphon starter Mikayla Cunningham (W, 4-2; 6 IP, 6 H, 0 BB, 2K) to put Old Westbury in the hit column. Two batters later, Fucci singled before Cunningham settled down to escape out of the jam.

Sarah Lawrence took a 4-0 lead in the fourth frame with a two-run double by Erin Chafatelli and Sarah Shapiro's RBI single.

Old Westbury threatened in the sixth with a single by Gabriella Valdes followed by Lauren Bloom's double to position runners in scoring position. Two batters later, Scharff reached on a bases loaded fielder's choice that resulted in Valdes getting thrown out at home, and a fly out by Katie Rizzo that stranded three Panthers on base.

The Gryphons put the game out of reach in the sixth by doubling their advantage by scoring four runs on five hits and an error to settle the 8-0 run-rule final.

Game 2: Sarah Lawrence 7, Old Westbury 0
Bloom (3-for-3) singled in the first inning off Sarah Lawrence starter Karissa McAuley (W, 1-2; 6 H, 0 R, 6 K, 0 BB) to give Old Westbury its first hit.

Kamaron McNair (2-for-4, 3 RBI) broke the scoring ice with a two-out RBI single off Bloom (L, 0-1; 6 IP, 7 R, 8 H, BB, 3 K) to give the Gryphons the first-inning advantage.

The Panthers were unable to capitalize on two-out singles by Joshlyn Grant and Bloom in the second and third innings, respectively.

Chafatelli's infield groundout doubled Sarah Lawrence's advantage in the second inning to score Mackenzie Mindish for the 2-0 lead.

Sarah Lawrence broke the game open in the fourth with four runs on five hits to push the lead to six before tacking on a single run in the sixth to cement the 7-0 final.

Old Westbury had its best scoring opportunity in the sixth with singles by Valdes, Bloom and Scharff, but were twice unable to advance past third as three Panthers were left stranded.

YESHIVA UNIVERSITY MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury (0-2, 0-0 Skyline) returns to action Friday (Mar. 24) for its home opener with a Skyline Conference doubleheader against the Yeshiva University Maccabees (2-2, 0-0 Skyline) at 10 a.m. from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
