Pizzutello dominates, helps @OW_Panthers Baseball split home opener with Castleton

Old Westbury remains at home for Sunday’s Skyline Conference doubleheader versus Maritime

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball (9-6) opened their home schedule Saturday by splitting a non-conference doubleheader with the Castleton University Spartans (4-3) inside Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Old Westbury claimed a 3-2 victory in the opener before falling 7-4 in game two.

Game 1: Old Westbury 3, Castleton 2
Panther starter Trey Pizzutello picked up the win to improve to 3-3 on the season to record his third-career complete-game outing.  He scattered three hits and allowed two unearned runs while fanning a season-high seven batters (one walk) in seven innings of work.

Castleton took a 2-0 lead on Pizzutello in the second inning with an infield the park home run to right center by Dillon Benham.  Old Westbury answered in the bottom of the second with a two-run single by Tommy Ziegen (1-for-3) off starter Michael LaBeau (L, 0-2; 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 K) to score Jesse Russo (2-for-2, R, 2B, BB) and Jesse Matos (2-for-2, RBI).

Matos slapped a timely two-out single through the left side in the fourth inning to score Carlos Balmaceda for the game-winning run.

For the final four innings, Pizzutello was set on cruise control as the Spartans reached base once during that stretch on a sixth inning walk.

Game 2: Castleton 7, Old Westbury 4
Castleton struck first with a sacrifice hit by Davis Mikell to score Deagan Poland in the opening frame.  Old Westbury took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first with a three-run big fly by Ziegen for his 10th career home run.

Panther starter Vinny Negri (5 IP, 6 R, 8 H, 2 BB, 2 K) was tapped for five runs on five hits in the second inning as Dylan Bailey (2-for-4, R) opened the scoring with a RBI single.  Nick Patierne and Jonathan Lindau (2-for-4) both produced two-run singles to push the lead to three.

Old Westbury answered in the fifth with one run to make it a 6-4 game.  Russo (1-for-4, 2 R) drove a one-out triple to right field off Spartan starter Luke Salerno (W, 1-0; 6 IP, 4 R, 9 H, 0 BB, 4 K) before scoring on a single by Liam Slattery.

Panther reliever Ryan Mordecai allowed an unearned run in the seventh on a throwing error by catcher Louis Sileno (2-for-3) to settle the 7-4 final.

Scott Michaels fanned two batters in a perfect seventh inning of relief to record his first save of the season.

SUNY MARITIME PRIVATEERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains at home Sunday (Mar. 26) for a Skyline Conference doubleheader versus the SUNY Maritime Privateers (7-6, 2-0 Skyline) at 12 p.m. from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
