@OW_Panthers Baseball shuts down Ramapo, 4-0

Old Westbury gets back to its winning ways after tossing its first shutout of the season

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball collected a 4-0 non-conference victory over the visiting Ramapo College Roadrunners (9-14) Wednesday afternoon inside Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.

Old Westbury (15-12) broke the scoring ice in the third inning off Roadrunner starter Tyler Lombardo (L, 0-1; 7.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K).  Jesse Russo (1-for-3, 3 R, HR, RBI, BB, SB) reached on a fielding error by the Roadrunners' second baseman Vincenzo Sita before stealing second.  Two batters later, Tommy Ziegen (2-for-3, RBI, SB) singled through the left side to bring home Russo and give the Panthers the early 1-0 lead.

Old Westbury doubled its advantage in the bottom frame of the fifth as Russo sent the ball deep over the right field fence to record his first-career home run.

Ramapo threatened to score in the top of the sixth with back-to-back singles off Panther starter Steven Tellerias (W, 2-0; 5 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 0 ER, BB).  Rob DeAngelis opened the inning with a single to up the middle and Brandon Martinez followed with a single through the left side to conclude Tellerias' outing.  Trey Pizzutello (S, 1; 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 K) came in relief efforts and forced three-straight batters to ground out to end the threat.

The Panthers tacked on insurance runs in the eighth inning off Lombardo and Roadrunner reliever Robert Sartori (ND, 0.2 IP, H).  Russo reached on a walk and later scored off a double to right field courtesy of David Hawley (1-for-3, R, RBI, BB, 2B) to push the lead to three (3-0).  Hawley later scored off Kevin Lao's double to left center to make it a 4-0 game.

Ramapo looked to the ninth inning as a final attempt to put runs on the board.  Four batters later, Matt Meola hit a two-out single to Panther third baseman Jesse Matos.  Meola was thrown out at second base as Old Westbury settled the 4-0 final and secure its first shutout of the season.

NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY GOTHIC KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels to Jersey City, New Jersey next Tuesday (Apr. 18) for a non-conference showdown against the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights at 4 p.m. from TM Gerrity Athletic Complex.
