@OW_Panthers Baseball sweeps St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) in Skyline Senior Day twinbill

Old Westbury concludes the regular season conference play next Saturday (Apr. 29) on the road against Mount Saint Vincent

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball concluded its regular season homestand after claiming an 11-2 and 3-0 Skyline Conference Senior Day wins to sweep the visiting St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) College Bears (12-17, 8-7 Skyline) Sunday afternoon from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.

Prior to first pitch, seniors Daniel Aguilo (2016-17), Carlos Balmaceda (2014-17), James English (2017), Kevin Lao (2016-17), Jesse Matos (2014-15, 2017), Ryan Mordecai (2016-17), Trey Pizzutello (2016-17), Paul Rapoli (2016-17) and Tommy Ziegen (2014-17) were honored with Old Westbury's annual Senior Day Ceremony for their dedication to SUNY Old Westbury Athletics.

Game 1: Old Westbury 11, St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) 2
Old Westbury broke the scoring ice in the first inning off Bear starter Anthony Amatuzzi (L, 0-4; 4.2 IP, 14 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 2 BB, 2 K).  Liam Slattery (2-for-3, 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB) doubled down the left field line to get on base for the Panthers.  Lao (4-for-4, 3B, 3 R, RBI) slapped a two-out RBI triple to bring home Slattery and later score on a throwing error by right fielder Anthony Camerada to give Old Westbury the early 2-0 lead.

Old Westbury added two more runs in the third inning.  Slattery reached on a error by first baseman John Condon (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and later scored off Amatuzzi's wild pitch to make it a 3-0 game.  Lao hit a single to right field before rounding home off of Louis Sileno's (3-for-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI) sacrifice fly to center fielder Kevin Linitz to push the Panthers' lead to 4-0.

Old Westbury tacked on seven runs in the bottom frame of the fifth inning.  Sileno helped the Panthers push its lead to six after he doubled down the left center to bring home Lao and scored two batters later off Balmaceda single through the right side (6-0).  Jesse Russo (2-for-4, 2B, R, RBI) worked a bases loaded by driving in two on double to right field.  Matos and Russo later scored courtesy of Slattery's single to extend the Panther lead 10-0.  Slattery scored off Ziegen's sacrifice fly to left fielder Michael Camerada to push the lead to a game-high 11 runs.

St. Joseph's put two runs on the board in the sixth inning off Panther starter Vinny Negri (W, 1-2; 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K).  Connor Pasetti (1-for-4, R) and Francis Rapp (1-for-4, R) both hit singles and later scored off Condon's two RBI triple to right field to trim the deficit to nine (11-2).

Both teams weren't able to capitalize in the final three innings before Old Westbury settled the 11-2 final.

Game 2: Old Westbury 3, St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) 0
After a scoreless three innings, Old Westbury broke the scoring ice off Bear starter Pasetti (L, 4-2; 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, K).  Ziegen (2-for-3, 2B, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI) doubled down the left field line and later scored off Sileno's two-out RBI single to give the Panthers the early 1-0 advantage.

Old Westbury tallied two more runs in the sixth inning as Ziegen sent the ball deep over the left field fence to score Russo (1-for-3, R, SB) and record his fifth home run on the season.  Russo singled through the left side to lead off the frame two batters earlier.

Panther starter Adam Heidenfelder (W, 1-3; 7 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, BB, 5 K) would induce three-straight ground outs in the seventh inning to secure the complete-game 3-0 shutout.
