@OW_Panthers Softball battles Mount Saint Vincent in Skyline doubleheader

Old Westbury continues conference play on the road Tuesday (Apr. 25) versus St. Joseph's (Brooklyn)

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury Softball hosted the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (18-12, 7-5 Skyline) Sunday afternoon in a Skyline Conference doubleheader inside Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Old Westbury (10-11, 4-11 Skyline) fell 12-1 in the opener before the Dolphins completed the sweep with a 7-2 win.

Game 1 (5 inn.): Mount Saint Vincent 12, Old Westbury 1
Mount Saint Vincent scored a pair of early unearned runs off Panther starter Amanda Fucci (L, 1-3;  4.0 IP, 11 H, 11 R, 7 ER, BB, 2 K) in the top of the first inning after the first two batters reached base on an error and a walk. The next batter Alanna Alioto-Reyes (1-for-3, R, RBI) sacrifice bunted the runners to second and third, before a sacrifice fly by Rachel Heizer (3-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI) and a double to left field by Mackenzie Heizer (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI) scored the two Dolphins runs.

After the Panthers threatened with two runners on in the bottom of the inning, Mount Saint Vincent starter M. Heizer (W, 4-6; 5.0 IP, 3 H, R, ER, 2 BB, K) was able to escape the jam with a pop out to second, a caught stealing, and a groundout to third.

In the top of the second, Fucci retired the first two batters of the inning on groundouts to shortstop, but the next seven batters were able to reach base safely, highlighted by a pair of run-scoring doubles by both R. Heizer and M. Heizer to increase the Dolphin advantage to 8-0.

Trailing 9-0 in the bottom of the third, the Panthers scored their first run of the game on a double to right center by Lauren Bloom (1-for-1, BB, RBI) to score Joshlyn Grant  (1-for-2, R) and cut the deficit to 9-1.

Mount Saint Vincent added two runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth as they took game one by a final of 12-1 in five innings.

Game 2: Mount Saint Vincent 7, Old Westbury 2
After Old Westbury starting pitcher Bloom (L, 4-4; 7.0 IP, 12 H, 7 R, 3 ER, BB, K) and Dolphin starter R. Heizer (W, 7-3; 7.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) kept the game scoreless through two innings, Mount Saint Vincent was able to score five runs in the top of the third inning.

After loading the bases, R. Heizer (2-for-3, R, 3 RBI) hit a single to right field that was booted which allowed all three runners to score. The Dolphins scored two more runs on a single by Taylor Milata (2-for-4, R, RBI) and an error to push the lead to 5-0.

With two on and two outs in the bottom half of the inning, Fucci (2-for-3, 2 RBI) hit a two-run triple to right center field to cut the deficit to three (5-2).

Mount Saint Vincent tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by R. Heizer and a single up the middle by M. Heizer (1-for-4, RBI) to regain a five-run lead, 7-2.

R. Heizer was able to keep the Panthers off the board for the rest of the game as the Dolphins secured the sweep of Old Westbury with the game two victory, 7-2.
