@OW_Panthers Softball tussles with Mount Saint Mary

Old Westbury concludes its road portion of the schedule Saturday (Apr. 29) in conference play versus St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn)

NEWBURGH, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury softball (10-13, 4-12 Skyline) dropped a 13-2 Skyline Conference decision to the Mount Saint Mary College Knights (22-12, 15-1 Skyline) Friday afternoon inside MSMC Softball Complex.

Mount Saint Mary broke the scoring ice with five runs in the first inning off Panther starter Amanda Neenan (L, 1-4; 5 IP, 14 H, 13 R, 4 ER, 5 BB).  Shannon Sommer (1-for-3, R, 2B) singled up the middle and two batters later scored when Michelle Surdan (1-for-2, 2 R) reached on a dropped fly by Diana Amaya to give the Knights the early 1-0 advantage.  Mount Saint Mary doubled the advantage (2-0) after Surdan advanced on a wild pitch to score Amanda Almodovar (2-for-4, 3 R).  Almodovar later scored off Breanna DePasquale (1-for-1, R, 2 RBI) sacrifice foul out to left field to push the Knights lead to three (3-0).  Emily Lang (3-for-4, 3 RBI) worked a bases loaded and singled up the middle to score Kathryn Eiler and Lauren Oury to make it a 5-0 game.

Mount Saint Mary tacked on four runs in the second inning off a sacrifice fly RBI by Cindy Connoly (1-for-3, R, HR, 4 RBI), a two-out RBI single by DePasquale, a two-out RBI double by Oury and a two-out RBI double by Nicolette Moustouka to extend the game to 9-0.

The Knights extended its advantage to 12-0 in the third inning as Connoly sent the ball over the right field fence to drive in three runs.  

Old Westbury put two on the board off Mount Saint Mary starter Colleen Dunn (W, 3-1; 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) in the bottom frame of the third.  Lauren Bloom (1-for-2, 2B, 2 RBI) slapped a two-out double to left field to bring home Katie Rizzo (R, BB) and Gabriella Valdes (1-for-3, R) and slice the deficit to 10 (12-2).  Rizzo earned a leadoff walk and Valdes singled to right field earlier in the inning.

Mount Saint Mary added a run in the top of the fifth courtesy of Lang's RBI singled through the left side as the Knights settled the 13-2 final.

ST. JOSEPH'S (BROOKLYN) COLLEGE BEARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels to Brooklyn, New York Saturday (Apr. 29) to conclude the road schedule in a Skyline Conference doubleheader showdown with the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) College Bears at 12 p.m. inside American Legion Field
