@OW_Panthers Baseball takes series finale to split Skyline doubleheader with USMMA

Old Westbury returns to action April 8 at Mount Saint Mary College

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball hosted a Skyline Conference home doubleheader Monday evening with the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (5-12, 3-5 Skyline) inside Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Old Westbury (12-10, 4-4 Skyline) fell 17-5 in the opener before bouncing back with a 9-3 victory in the finale to salvage the split. 

Game 1: USMMA 17, Old Westbury 5
USMMA broke the scoring ice in the second inning off Panther starter Jason Espinal (ND, 3.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, BB, K) with Francis Grzymkowsi's RBI single to advance Kyle Cunningham home for the early 1-0 lead.
 
Old Westbury answered in the second with a RBI single by Michael Gismondi (2-for-5, R) off Mariner starter Justus Martin (W, 2-2; 9 IP, 17 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 6 K) to score Dean Sheridan (2-for-5, RBI, 2 R) for the equalizer. 

Trailing 2-1 in the third inning, Sheriden slapped a single up the middle to score Tommy Ziegen before scoring two batters later off a sacrifice fly by Louis Sileno to take a 3-2 lead. 

With the game tied (4-4) in the fifth, USMMA pulled ahead for good by scoring six runs on three hits and two errors to grab a 10-4 advantage. 

Reliever Vinny Negri (L, 0-2; 1 IP, 4 H, BB, K) took the loss as he was charged with seven runs (five earned) after recording three outs split between the fourth and fifth innings.

USMMA scored 13 unanswered runs until Gianni Carbone's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning plated home Tyler Roberts to settle the game one's 17-5 final.

Game 2: Old Westbury 9, USMMA 3
USMMA scored first to jump out to a 1-0 lead on Panther starter Daniel Aguilo (W, 2-0; 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) as Grzymkowsi's second inning sacrifice fly scored Michael Barnes for the game's initial run. 

Old Westbury answered with a four-run fourth off Mariner starter Ben Kane (L, 0-2; 3 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 BB).  Sheridan started the scoring with a RBI single to score Ziegen (2-for-4, 2 R) and four batters later a sacrifice fly by Jesse Matos (1-for-2, 2 RBI, R) scored Paul Rapoli (0-for-2, 2 R, 2 BB) for what proved to be the game-winning run.

The Panthers then scored five more runs in the fifth highlighted by RBI singles by Matos and Nick Cordero to make it a 9-1 game. 

Barnes drove a two-run homer off Aguilo to settle the 9-3 final in the sixth frame.

MOUNT SAINT MARY COLLEGE KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels to Newburgh, New York on Saturday (Apr. 8) for a Skyline Conference doubleheader against the Mount Saint Mary College Knights at 12 p.m. from MSMC Baseball Complex
