@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball storms past Sarah Lawrence for fourth-straight win

Old Westbury travels Thursday (Jan. 18) to United States Merchant Marine Academy for a Skyline Conference showdown

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball closed out their four-game homestand Tuesday evening with a 103-24 Skyline Conference wire-to-wire win over the visiting Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (1-12, 0-9 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center.  Old Westbury (13-1, 7-1 Skyline) held their opposition to its lowest-point total (24) since January 28, 2012, when they defeated Vaughn College, 75-8.

Old Westbury took control from the opening tip as Monique Joseph's layup 30 seconds in put the Panthers in front.  The lead quickly grew to 10 off a Bridgid McNeill layup with 6:53 left in the first quarter.  Old Westbury's defense threw Sarah Lawrence off during a 25-0 run to start the game as the Gryphons misfired on their first 11 shots.  Taryn Penna put Sarah Lawrence on the board with 55 seconds remaining in the first quarter.  Old Westbury played with a 40-point lead for the final 21:28 after Alessia Drevnyak's layup with 1:28 left in the half made ita 51-10 game.  Drevnyak later closed out the first-half scoring with a layup before the buzzer to send Old Westbury into intermission with a 44-point lead (56-12).

Leading by 60 (82-22) after three quarters of play, Old Westbury's advantage blossomed to 72 with 5:43 showing on the fourth-quarter clock as a jumper by Phalan Smith closed out a 16-0 run.  Paige Jelinek dropped in a layup with 51 seconds remaining to settle the 79-point margin of victory.

Drevnyak recorded her first-career double-double by posting career highs of 18 points and 24 rebounds (15 offensive) to go along with three steals (tied career-high) and two blocks (tied career-high) in leading Old Westbury.  The 24 rebounds are the most by a Panther since Crystal Barnes grabbed 26 versus Farmingdale State College on January 22, 2016.  McNeill followed with 16 points (8-of-10 FG) to tie her career high and pulled down six rebounds (five offensive).  Jelinek chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds (eight offensive) to register her first-career double-double.  Joseph added with 12 points and a game-high six steals.  Charlotte Renker contributed 12 points and two steals and Destiny Marino scored 10 points and nabbed three steals.

Taryn Penna helped Sarah Lawrence with 17 points and 2 steals.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 41.1 percent (49-of-104) from the field, 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from 3-point range and 37.5 percent (3-of-8) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Sarah Lawrence hit on 18 percent (11-of-61) from the floor, 0 percent (0-of-15) from beyond the arc and 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 74-37, while scoring 37 second-chance points off 38 offensive rebounds. The Panthers held the advantage in blocks (7-4), assists (27-2), steals (21-6), fastbreak points (24-8), points in the paint (86-18) and bench points (49-2).  Old Westbury scored 48 points off 32 Gryphon turnovers.
