Thomson’s 22 leads @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball versus Mount Saint Vincent

Old Westbury returns to the court Thursday (Jan. 4) in Skyline Conference action at Sarah Lawrence College

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball returned home Tuesday to open the 2018 calendar year with a 93-84 Skyline Conference setback to the visiting College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (6-5, 4-2 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center.

Old Westbury (3-7, 2-3 Skyline) committed a trio of turnovers to fall behind early as Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to an 11-0 advantage 3:06 in.  After trailing 13-1, Old Westbury scored seven of the game's next nine points capped by Brandon Thomson's 3-pointer to pull within seven (15-8) with 14:06 left.  The Panthers scored 11 unanswered points to take their first lead (19-18) off a 3-point play from Alan McDonald with 11:15 remaining.  Moments later, Old Westbury worked its way out of a six-point deficit (30-24) with an 11-0 run to go up 35-30 at 4:27.  Both teams played even for the final 3:33 for Old Westbury's 45-40 lead at intermission.  

Mount Saint Vincent scored eight-straight points to open second-half play before Old Westbury countered with a 12-4 run to take a 57-52 lead with 13:05 remaining.  Following a 5-0 spurt that gave Old Westbury a 68-64 lead, Mount Saint Vincent strung together a 15-2 run from 6:49 to 3:01 to take a 79-70 advantage.  The Dolphins played with the lead for the final 6:22 as Makai Johnson's 3-pointer put Mount Saint Vincent ahead to make it a 69-68 game.  Mount Saint Vincent extended its lead to a game-high 13 points (88-75) off Ammad Alkhulaidi's 3-point play with 1:03 left.

Thomson finished with a career-high 22 points (8-of-12 FG, 5-of-5 3FG) to lead Old Westbury.  McDonald followed with 20 points (5-of-7 FG, 10-of-10 FT), five rebounds and two steals while Terrin Roland scored 12 points and dished out six assists.  Stanley Baker chipped in 10 points, six rebounds and four blocks (tied career-high).  Preston Powell nabbed a game-high four steals.  

Alkhulaidi paced Mount Saint Vincent with game highs of 34 points (13-of-17 FG), 20 rebounds (eight offensive) and  nine assists to go along with two blocks and two steals.  Jose Maestre scored 21 points and Johnson added 14.  

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the field, 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from 3-point range and 80.8 percent (21-of-26) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Mount Saint Vincent hit on 47.8 percent (32-of-67) from the floor, 44 percent (11-of-25) from beyond the arc and 64.3 percent (18-of-28) from the charity stripe.  The Dolphins won the boards battle, 50-27, while scoring 26 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury held the advantage in steals (10-8), blocks (4-2) and bench points   (47-24).  The Panthers also converted 20 Dolphin turnovers into 24 points.  

SARAH LAWRENCE COLLEGE GRYPHONS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels to Bronxville, New York on Thursday (Jan. 4) for a Skyline Conference battle against the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (2-10, 1-6 Skyline) at 6 p.m. inside Campbell Sports Center.
