Trio of 20-point scorers pace @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball against Puget Sound at Doug McArthur Classic

Old Westbury returns to the court next on December 1 to christen its home schedule with a Skyline Conference opener against St. Joseph’s College (L.I.)

TACOMA, WA --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball erased a double-digit halftime lead before falling short with a 101-100 overtime setback to the University of Puget Sound Loggers (1-0) Saturday evening at the Doug McArthur Classic inside Memorial Fieldhouse from Tacoma, Washington.

Both teams traded leads early on until Puget Sound's Stellan Roberts landed a three pointer to put the Loggers ahead, 6-5.  Puget Sound constructed a game-high 21-point lead (50-29) with a 21-10 run during a stretch of 4:21 late in the opening half.

Trailing by 19 (56-37) at intermission, Old Westbury (1-0) played inspired second-half ball.  Pedro Marquez and Inderpal Dhaliwal set the tone early with triples to slice Old Westbury's deficit to 11 (62-53) with 16:39 left.  Marquez knocked down two free throws 1:05 later to make it a nine-point game (63-54). Old Westbury tied the game at 65 as Stanley Baker converted a pair of free throws with 12:34 remaining.  Following Dhaliwal's three pointer, Alan McDonald's free throws with 8:10 showing on the clock gave Old Westbury its first lead in 29:44. Marquez caught fire during a 21-8 run by scoring eight points to build Old Westbury's 10-point lead (88-78) with 3:20 left.  The Loggers went on a 12-2 run to sound off in the final 3:20 capped by Gabriel Chaikin's game-tying three pointer with 37 seconds left to make it a 90-all game. Old Westbury missed on a pair of layups by Yancy Ulysse and Justin Alleyne-Washington in the final four seconds as the game moved to overtime.

Chaikin and Roberts hit back-to-back three pointers as part of an 8-2 spurt to open the extra period for Puget Sound's six-point cushion (98-92) with 3:27 left.  Alleyne-Washington scored four unanswered points to pull Old Westbury within two (98-96) with 2:24 remaining. Following Jimmy Wohrer's three pointer that put the Loggers up by five (101-96), Marquez and Alleyne-Washington both dropped in layups to chop the deficit to one (101-100) with 45 seconds left.  Chaikin missed a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining as McDonald misfired on a desperation three pointer from long distance as time expired.

McDonald led the way with career highs of 26 points (9-of-15 FG, 7-of-10 FT) and 12 rebounds to register his second-career double-double.  Marquez played a team-leading 42 minutes to score 17 of his 23 points (7-of-15 FG, 3-of-6 3FG, 6-of-6 FT) in the second half and added six rebounds and four assists to his statline.  Alleyne-Washington followed with 21 points (8-of-16 FG) and 10 rebounds while Dhaliwal went for 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point land. Ulysse swatted two shots and Baker nabbed two steals.

Wohrer paced Puget Sound with 24 points (8-of-15 3FG) while Roberts hit for 23 (6-of-10 3FG).  Chaikin added 19 points (4-of-5 3FG) and Max Basile chipped in with 12 (2-of-2 3FG) as the Sounders' starting five combined to shoot 20-of-32 from three-point territory.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 47.2 percent (34-of-72) from the field,  39.1 percent (9-of-23) from long range and 74.2 percent (23-of-31) from the free-throw line while Puget Sound fired away at 46.7 percent (35-of-75) from the floor, 55 percent (22-of-40) from beyond the arc and 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from the charity stripe.  The Panthers finished with a +10 (50-40) rebounding margin while outplaying Puget Sound in blocks (4-0) and points in the paint (38-22) as the Loggers held the advantage in assists (22-12), steals (8-5), second-chance points (18-17), points off turnovers (20-9) and bench scoring (16-8).
