Third-quarter surge propels @OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball past Simmons, 81-78

Old Westbury will play Lasell College in Sunday’s (Nov. 25) Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament championship game

BROOKLYN, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball claimed an 81-78 non-conference victory over the Simmons College Sharks (0-5) Saturday afternoon at the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament from Cougars Cave in Brooklyn.  The Panthers (3-0) open the 2018-19 campaign with a three-game winning streak for the third-consecutive year to advance to Sunday's (Nov. 25) title game in which they will face the Lasell College Lasers (2-3) at 3 p.m.

Old Westbury broke the scoring ice with an 11-2 run ignited by a Charlotte Renker layup with 6:46 remaining in the opening quarter.  Simmons responded with a 20-5 run kicked off by a Cassandra Stapelfeld triple at 6:05 to close out the first quarter with a 22-16 lead.  The Panthers scored four-unanswered points to pull within four (31-27) with 4:49 showing on the second-quarter clock.  The Sharks used a 10-6 run from 4:44 to 1:07 to extend their lead to a game-high 11 points (44-33). Tori Bellings sank a free throw with 32 seconds left for Old Westbury to head into the break trailing by 10 points (44-34).

Bellings opened the second-half scoring by laying in two points at 9:17 before Rebekah Carroll's layup pushed Simmons' lead back up to 10 points (46-36) with 8:48 left in the quarter.  Micah Browne's free throws kickstarted a 12-3 Panther run over a span of 4:50 to knot the game at 49 with 2:29 remaining. With 48 seconds showing on the third-quarter clock, Davida Warren's layup gave Old Westbury a brief 51-49 advantage before Kirra Courchesne dropped in two to tie the game at 51 heading into the fourth quarter.

Both teams battled to hold the advantage throughout the fourth quarter.  With the game tied at 78, Old Westbury regained the lead behind a timely three-point conversion courtesy of Browne with four seconds remaining.  As time was expiring, Stapelfeld misfired on a three-point heave for Simmons to settle the 81-78 final.
Browne scored 16 of her career-high 22 points (7-of-12 FG, 8-of-11 FT) in the fourth quarter to go along with a game-high seven assists to lead Old Westbury.

Monique Joseph followed with 19 points (6-of-15 FG, 7-of-10 FT), 11 rebounds (seven offensive) and a game-high four steals to post her 16th-career double-double (first of the season).  Warren contributed 15 points (7-of-9 FG) and six rebounds.

Stapelfeld poured in a game-high 26 points (5-of-13 FG, 13-of-14 FT) to pace Simmons.   Carroll put together a 20 point (5-of-10 FG, 8-of-10 FT), seven rebound performance while Molly Phillips finished with 14 points (6-of-11 FG) and 11 boards.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 46 percent (29-of-63) from the field, 0-of-8 from long range and 67.6 percent from the free-throw line while Simmons fired away at 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the floor, 50 percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc and 88.5 percent (23-of-26) from the charity stripe.  Entering Saturday's contest, the Panthers hadn't won without making a three-point field goal since February 16, 2017 against Yeshiva University. The Panthers finished with a +5 (40-35) rebounding margin while outplaying the Sharks in blocks (3-2), , assists (15-12), steals (11-9), points in the paint (52-24), second-chance points (16-6) and points off turnovers (21-18).  Simmons led the way in bench scoring (14-13).
