@OW_Panthers Baseball opens season with 2-1 win at Kean

Old Westbury returns to the diamond Saturday (Mar. 3) versus Baruch College

UNION, NJ --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball opened their 2018 campaign Monday afternoon with a 2-1 road win over the Kean University Cougars (4-2) from Jim Hynes '63 Stadium in Union, New Jersey.  Old Westbury (1-0) has won the last three matchups versus Kean.

Old Westbury had four-consecutive batters reach base in the fourth inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead.  Following John Fogarty's one-out double, John Condon broke a scoreless tie with a RBI single up the middle.  Two batters later, Old Westbury doubled its advantage with Condon scoring from second for the game-winning run off Mike Manetta's RBI single to right field.

Panther starter Adam Heidenfelder (1-0) fanned six batters and scattered five hits over five frames of work to secure the win.  Heidenfelder was on cruise control until three Cougars reached base in the fourth.  Nick Polizzano put Kean on the board with a double to left field to score John Carallo from second.

Kean threatened in the ninth with runners on the corners before Matt Bohenek induced a grounder to Andrew Ferrara for the game ending double play.

Joe Sarni tossed the sixth and seventh innings to bridge the gap for Bohenek, who threw two innings to register the save.

Jonathan Rodriguez (0-1) registered eight strikeouts and surrendered two runs on four hits and three walks to take Kean's loss.

BARUCH COLLEGE BEARCATS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the diamond Saturday (Mar. 3) afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader versus the Baruch College Bearcats at 11 a.m. from Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, New York.
