@OW_Panthers Baseball rallies to split St. Lawrence series

Old Westbury continues play Monday (Mar. 19) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic against #21 Johns Hopkins University

FORT MYERS, FL --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball fell 7-6 in the opener and rallied to pick up a 4-3 non-conference win from the St. Lawrence University Saints (1-2) Saturday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic from Lee County Player Development Complex No. 5 in Fort Myers, Florida.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 7, Old Westbury 6
Old Westbury fell behind early as St. Lawrence posted a six-run second inning on Panther starter Vinny Negri (L, 1-1, 2.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 4 BB, K).  Beau Yaremko (2-for-5, 5 RBI) keyed the inning with a grand slam to increase the lead to five.

John Condon (2-for-4) put the Panthers on the board in the third with a two-out RBI single to score Jesse Russo (1-for-4, RBI).

Yaremko delivered a critical RBI single to score James Cronin (1-for-2, 2 R, RBI, BB, SB) for what proved to be the game-winning run in the third inning to make it a 7-1 game.  
David Hawley (1-for-2, 2 RBI) singled home Dom Kriegel (2-for-4, 2 R) as part of a two-run fourth inning for Old Westbury.  Russo then grounded out to first to score Michael Borsch to slice Old Westbury's deficit to four runs (7-3). 

Old Westbury scored again in the sixth off Saint starter Alex Black (W, 1-0, 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 ER, BB, 3 K) as Hawley lifted a sacrifice fly out to left to score Kriegel.  

Will Fellows closed out a shaky seventh inning to earn St. Lawrence's save.  Dean Sheridan drove a grounder to shortstop Taylor Digilio to score Liam Slattery (1-for-2, R, 2 BB).  Mike Manetta then followed with a RBI single through the right side to advance John Fogarty home to settle the 7-6 final.  

Alipio Tiburcio scattered two hits in 3.1 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts for Old Westbury.  

Game 2: Old Westbury 4, St. Lawrence 3
Fogarty (2-for-3, 2 RBI) opened the scoring in the first inning with a RBI single off Saint starter Caleb Clarke (ND, 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 2 K) to score Russo (1-for-2, RBI, R, 2 BB).  

St. Lawrence tied the game in the third as Isaac Lewis's two-out double off Panther reliever Steven Tellerias (4.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) drove in Taylor Guido.
 
Old Westbury regained the lead in the third inning with a RBI double by Fogarty that scored Hawley (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI, 3B, BB) to make it a 2-1 game.
 
St. Lawrence put two on the board in the seventh to grab a 3-2 lead.  Guido reached base witha two-out double and scored two batters later off Digilio's RBI single.  Lewis followed with a run-scoring single to center field to advance Evan Reichel home for the go-ahead run.  
 
Shaun Kaminski drew a leadoff walk from Fellows (L, 0-1, 2 H, 2 R, BB) in the seventh.  Manetta's sacrifice bunt moved Kaminski to second before taking third on a passed ball.  Hawley then slapped a triple to right center to score Kaminski.  Russo followed with a walk-off single to left field to score Hawley for the game-winning run.

Matt Bohenek (W, 1-0, 0.1 IP, BB, K) recorded the final out in the top of seventh inning to earn Old Westbury's win.   


Panther starter Christian Tessitore (ND, 2 IP, 3 H, 2 K) made his season debut with two scoreless innings of work.
