@OW_Panthers Baseball splits Skyline doubleheader with USMMA

Old Westbury continues Skyline Conference play Sunday (Apr. 8) at Farmingdale State College

KINGS POINT, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball dropped a 6-4 decision in the opener before claiming the 9-5 win in the rubber match Saturday afternoon against the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (19-4, 6-2 Skyline) in Skyline Conference action from Roosevelt Field in Kings Point, New York.

Game 1: USMMA 6, Old Westbury 4
USMMA broke the scoring ice with two runs in the second inning off Panther starter Jason Espinal (L, 1-1; 6.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K).  Kyle Cunningham hit a leadoff single to right field before scoring off Bryson Campbell's RBI triple to center field. Campbell then scored off a throwing error by shortstop Shaun Kaminski for the Mariners' 2-0 lead.

Old Westbury put one on the board in the third inning by capitalizing on a fielding error by Mariner starter Justus Martin (W, 3-1; 5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, BB, 3 K).  Liam Slattery led off the frame with a single to left center. John Fogarty followed with a double down the left field line to advance Slattery to third. Two batters later, Capel reached on the error to score Slattery and trim the Panther deficit to one (2-1).

The Mariners made it a 3-1 game in the bottom frame as Jacob Sithong rounded the bases off Michael Barnes' sacrifice fly out to right field.

The Panthers pulled within one (3-2) in the fourth inning off Slattery's sacrifice fly out to center to score Shaun Kaminski.

Zack Winzer drove in the game-winning runs in the fourth inning with a two-run single to score Campbell and Vincenzo Alteri for USMMA's 5-2 lead.

Old Westbury battled in the fifth inning as Capel singled to right field to earn a base before scoring off Dom Kriegel's sacrifice fly out to center field to make it a 5-3 game.

USMMA added an insurance run in the fifth inning with Campbell's sacrifice fly to score Cunningham.

Old Westbury threatened in the seventh inning with the bases loaded.  Russo produced a two-out RBI single to score Capel to settle the 6-4 final on Marnier reliever Quinton Heck (S, 1; 4.0 IP, 7 H, R, ER, 2 BB, K).

Game 2: Old Westbury 9, USMMA 5
USMMA scored three unearned runs to take a first inning lead.  Jesse Reinebold reached base on a throwing error by second baseman Russo before scoring off Cunningham' single to right field. Barnes stole home before Cunningham scored off a Colin Baker RBI single to right field for the 3-0 lead.

Old Westbury replied in the third inning with three runs off Mariner starter Ben Kane (L, 2-1; 4.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) to tie the game (3-3).  Fogarty homered to drive in two runs. John Condon followed with a double to left center before scoring off Capel's RBI double.

The Panthers added two runs in the fifth inning as Condon induced a leadoff walk.  Mike Manetta used a one-out double to right field to advance Condon to third. Dean Sheridan singled to right field off Mariner reliever J. Kelly Jr. (ND; 1.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, K) to drive home Condon.  Manetta scored off Tyler Roberts' RBI single to extend Old Westbury's lead, 5-3.

The Mariners answered with a run in the the fifth as Reinebold scored on a throwing error by Roberts in right field to make it a 5-4 game.

Fogarty slapped his second homer of the day in the sixth inning to drive in Russo and Slattery for the game-winning runs to build an 8-4 advantage.  

USMMA sliced the deficit to three as the team scored an unearned run in the sixth inning.

Slattery singled home David Hawley in the seventh to produce Old Westbury's ninth run.  

FARMINGDALE STATE COLLEGE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury (8-10-1, 2-4 Skyline) continues Skyline Conference play Sunday (Apr. 8) on the road with a 12 p.m. doubleheader against the Farmingdale State College Rams (12-7, 4-2 Skyline) from Rams Field in Farmingdale, New York.
