@OW_Panthers Women’s Volleyball Celebrates Senior Day with Skyline-opening win over Mount Saint Vincent

Old Westbury remains at home Wednesday (Oct. 4) with a Skyline Conference matchup against St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn)

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball hosted a Skyline Conference Senior Day tri-match Sunday against the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (3-13, 1-3 Skyline) and the Mount Saint Mary College Knights (9-9, 2-1 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center.  The Panthers (2-11, 1-1 Skyline) won a four-set decision (17-25, 25-23, 25-16, 27-25) in their conference opener against the Dolphins before falling in three sets (25-15, 25-17, 27-25) to Mount Saint Mary.  With the Skyline-opening win, Old Westbury snapped a six-game losing streak to Mount Saint Vincent dating back to 2012.  

Prior to first serve against Mount Saint Mary, seniors Natasha Treuman (2018), Shanayia Lloyd (2015-18) and Sofia Goris (2015-18) were honored with the annual Senior Day Ceremony for their dedication to SUNY Old Westbury Athletics.

Old Westbury rallied with three-straight set wins to finish the opening match hitting at a rate of .094 while outplaying Mount Saint Vincent in aces (18-11), blocks (8-3) and digs (60-53).  The Dolphins hit .224 to hold advantage in kills (50-33) and assists (48-26).

Kyraleigh Zinnel led Old Westbury with 13 assists, 13 digs, 10 aces and five kills to post her second-career triple-double.  Danielle Corsi nailed down 10 kills and hit .444 as Daesha Garrison followed with six kills and 10 digs.  Kristin Grieshaber served four aces and scooped 14 digs.  Joelle Desrosiers had five kills and 4.5 blocks (three solo).  Goris contributed 14 digs to the win.   

Madison Gale dished out 23 assists and served four aces to pace the Dolphins.  Tara Maloney and Samantha Schroeder both totaled 18 and 16 kills, respectively.  Gabriella Maggi added 11 digs. 

Against the Knights, both teams opened with their best hitting sets as Old Westbury attacked at a rate of .148 and Mount Saint Mary hit .412.  In the end, Mount Saint Mary held the edge in hitting percentage (.276 - .092), kills (38-31), aces (7-6), blocks (5-0) and assists (37-29).  Old Westbury finished with 49 digs compared to Mount Saint Mary's 41.

Zinnel served a match-high three aces to go with 17 digs (tied career-high), 14 assists and six kills to post her 12th-career double-double.  Corsi racked up eight kills on 16 swings.  Grieshaber totaled 13 assists and five kills as Lloyd chipped in with five kills.  Goris held down the defense with 13 digs.

Kim Gries handed out a match-leading 32 assists while Morgan Burke (12 kills) and Alex Klesin (10 kills) led Mount Saint Mary's attackers.  Burke had two blocks and Alyssa Barbara tallied eight digs.

ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE (BROOKLYN) BEARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury closes out its homestand Wednesday (Oct. 3) evening at 6 p.m. with a Skyline Conference showdown inside Clark Athletic Center against the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (3-6, 0-1 Skyline).  The Bears hold a 3-0 mark against the Panthers since joining the conference in 2015.
