@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball scores four in double-digits at Farmingdale State

Old Westbury is back in action Tuesday (Jan. 29) at home against Sarah Lawrence College in Skyline Conference play

FARMINGDALE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball were outscored by eight points in overtime Saturday afternoon to drop a 87-79 Skyline Conference road decision to the Farmingdale State College Rams (11-7, 9-4 Skyline) inside Walter A. Lynch Sports Center.  The Panthers (10-8, 8-5 Skyline) suffer a season sweep by the Rams for the second-straight year and are now 1-5 at Farmingdale State since 2013-14.

Early layups by Alan McDonald and Chase Johnson opened the scoring to give Old Westbury a 4-0 lead 1:16 in.  The Rams countered with a 12-2 run as George Riefenstahl scored five points to give Farmingdale State a 15-6 advantage with 13:28 left.  Moments later, Old Westbury regained a 16-15 lead with a three-pointer by Johnson at 11:51. Farmingdale State missed nine-straight shots while Justin Alleyne-Washington scored 11 points during a key 16-0 Panther run to put Old Westbury up by 10 (25-15) with 8:16 remaining.  The Rams took a 32-29 lead off the power of a 17-4 spurt with 1:41 showing on the first-half clock. Trailing 34-31, Pedro Marquez connected from deep with 46 seconds left to tie the game for Old Westbury.

With the game tied at 36, Alleyne-Washington drilled home a triple to ignite an 8-0 run to give the Panthers a 44-36 lead.  Farmingdale State responded with seven-straight points to pull within one (44-43) with 15:54 remaining. After a scoring drought of 2:40, Matthew Graham connected from downtown to give the Rams a 46-44 lead.  From there, Old Westbury went on an 18-6 scoring spree during a stretch of 7:27 capped by Marquez's layup that gave Old Westbury a 62-52 advantage with 5:39 left in regulation. The Rams outscored Old Westbury 12-5 in the final 1:30 as Riefenstahl landed a three-pointer with one second left to force overtime.

The Panthers were held scoreless for the opening 2:33 until Johnson hit a three-pointer to trim Old Westbury's deficit to two (78-76).  Farmingdale State scored nine-straight points to take a game-high 11-point lead (87-76) before Marquez connected from deep with eight seconds remaining to settle the eight-point setback.  

Alleyne-Washington led all scorers with 21 points (6-of-12 FG, 2-of-4 3FG, 7-of-9 FT) to go with 13 rebounds (tied career-high), five steals (career-high) and one block to post his eighth double-double of the season.  McDonald finished with 17 points (7-of-14 FG) and nine rebounds while Marquez totaled 14 points, six assists and two steals. Johnson added 11 points (career-high 3-of-4 3FG) while Stanley Baker chipped in nine points and seven rebounds off the bench.   

Ali Mableton's 17 points led five other Rams in double-digit scoring.  Riefenstahl added 12 points, 17 rebounds and two blocks.

Old Westbury shot 39.1 percent (27-of-69) from the field, 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from three-point territory and 68 percent (17-of-25) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Farmingdale State connected on 39.7 percent (27-of-68) from the floor, 32 percent (8-of-25) from three-point land and 73.5 percent (25-of-34) from the charity stripe.  The Rams held a +7 rebound margin (49-42) while Old Westbury scored 14 second-chance points off 14 offensive boards. The Panthers outplayed Farmingdale State in steals (8-3), points in the paint (34-32) and fastbreak points (8-4).  Farmingdale State converted 14 Panther turnovers into 17 points and held a 29-9 bench scoring advantage as both teams drew even in blocks (3-3).

SARAH LAWRENCE COLLEGE GRYPHONS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns home Tuesday (Jan. 29) for a Skyline Conference matchup against the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (12-7, 10-4 Skyline) at 5 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.  The Panthers enter with an 8-0 record against Sarah Lawrence since the Gryphons joined the Skyline Conference in 2014-15.
