Sharp shooting lifts @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball to Skyline win at St. Joseph’s (L.I.)

Old Westbury is back home Saturday (Feb. 2) for a Senior Day Skyline Conference showdown against Purchase College

PATCHOGUE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball led by 11 points at halftime Thursday evening to capture an 86-74 Skyline Conference road triumph against the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles (5-15, 4-11 Skyline) inside Danzi Center.  The Panthers (12-8, 10-5 Skyline) sweep the season series for the second-straight year to improve to 12-3 versus St. Joseph's since the 2012-13 campaign.

Old Westbury received layups from Justin Alleyne-Washington, Pedro Marquez and Alan McDonald to take a 6-0 lead 2:28 in.  St. Joseph's scored 11 of the game's next 14 points to go up by two (11-9) at the 14:38 mark. The Panthers answered with a 15-4 spurt to grab a 24-15 lead with 10:33 left in the half.  After the Golden Eagles cut their deficit to two (24-22), Old Westbury outscored St. Joseph's by nine (15-6) over the final 8:45 to hold a 39-28 advantage at halftime.

Jonah Caldwell opened the second-period scoring with a jumper to chip Old Westbury's lead down to nine (39-30).  Playing ahead for the final 33:18, Old Westbury went on a 19-4 scoring spree to grow its lead to a game-high 24 points (58-34) with 15:26 showing on the second-half clock.  Trailing 74-53, St. Joseph's put together a 14-1 run to get a close as eight points (75-67) with 3:29 left before Old Westbury outscored the Golden Eagles 11-7 down the stretch to secure the 12-point win.  

Alleyne-Washington poured in 21 points (8-of-14 FG, 2-of-4 3FG) to lead three other Panthers in double-digits.  Chase Johnson scored a career-high 20 points (7-of-11 FG, 6-of-7 3FG) to go with six rebounds and two steals. Marquez also went for 20 points (3-of-5 3FG, 7-of-8 FT) and six assists in 40 minutes of action.  McDonald added 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists to the win. Stanley Baker swatted three shots off the bench.

Frank Basile led all scorers with 35 points (14-of-23 FG, 7-of-11 3FG) to pace St. Joseph's.  Doug Niblock followed with 23 points (9-of-13 FG) while Jonah Caldwell chipped in 12 points (6-of-11 FG) and two steals.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 54.5 percent (30-of-50) from the field, 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from three-point territory and 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, St. Joseph's connected on 50 percent (31-of-62) from the floor, 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from beyond the arc and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Old Westbury won the boards battle, 31-26, while St. Joseph's scored 14 second-chance points off six offensive rebounds.  The Panthers outplayed St. Joseph's in assists (19-8), blocks (4-1), steals (5-3), bench points (11-4), fastbreak points (8-6) and points in the paint (28-26) while scoring 17 points off 15 Golden Eagle turnovers.

SENIOR DAY VERSUS PURCHASE COLLEGE PANTHERS UP NEXT FOR OLD WESTBURY: Old Westbury returns to campus on Saturday (Feb. 2) for a Skyline Conference Senior Day matchup against the Purchase College Panthers (11-9, 9-6 Skyline) at 3 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.  Old Westbury hold a 6-2 record against Purchase dating back to the 2014-15 season. Prior to opening tip, seniors Stanley Baker (2015-19), Alan McDonald (2017-19) and Darale Young (2017-19) will be honored for their dedication to Old Westbury Athletics.
