Five double-digit scorers pace Men’s Basketball at Yeshiva

Old Westbury is set for its home opener next Saturday (Dec. 7) against DeSales University

MANHATTAN --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball opened Skyline Conference play on the road Tuesday evening with a 94-79 setback to the Yeshiva University Maccabees (6-1, 2-0 Skyline) inside Max Stern Athletic Center in Manhattan.  The loss moves Old Westbury (1-4, 0-1 Skyline) to an 8-7 mark against the Maccabees dating back to the 2013-14 season.

Yeshiva was in the driver seat to open the game by claiming a five-point lead, 9-4, with 16:40 remaining.  Justin Alleyne-Washington knocked down a triple at the 16:29 mark to ignite an 18-6 run for Old Westbury to take the seven-point advantage, 22-15. Yeshiva responded with a 16-9 spurt from 12:01 to 6:20, headlined by 10 points coming off the hands of Ryan Turell, to knot the game at 31. Both teams battled for the edge over the next 4:30 as Andrew Buskey connected from deep with 36 seconds left and sent Old Westbury into the break with the 39-38 lead.

Old Westbury worked to keep the game close to open the second-half and was able to regain a brief three-point lead, 56-53, off a Cameron Winston layup at 13:29. With 13:03 remaining, Simcha Halpert drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 56 before Pierrce Perry dropped in two to make it a one possession game (58-56) for the Panthers. The Maccabees then scored seven-unanswered points to reclaim the lead for good, 63-58, with 10:26 left.  Perry slammed home back-to-back dunks to pull the Panthers within one (63-62) before Yeshiva put together a 21-12 run from 8:54 to 2:02 to grow its lead to double-digits, 84-74, capped by Turell's layup.  Pedro Marquez laid in two with 37 seconds remaining in regulation to trim the deficit to nine (88-79) before the Maccabees netted six-straight points to build a game-high 15 points and settle the 94-79 final.

Marquez finished with 17 points (7-of-13 FG, 3-of-6 3FG) to pace Old Westbury.  Winston followed with 16 points and game-high six assists. Perry chipped in with 14 points (6-of-8 FG) and seven rebounds while Alleyne-Washington poured in 14 points (5-of-10 FG).  Charles Wingate added 13 points (6-of-10 FG) and nabbed a game-high four steals.

Turell led all scorers with a game-high 30 points (9-of-12 FG, 4-of-5 3FG, 8-of-8 FT).  Gabriel Leifer contributed 20 points (6-of-10 FG, 7-of-7 FT) and game highs of 11 rebounds and two blocks.  Halpert scored 14 points (5-of-7 FG, 4-of-6 3FG), dished out five assists and nabbed three steals while Ofek Reef finished with 11 points.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 47.8 percent (32-of-67) from the field, 31 percent (9-of-29) from three-point range and 54.5percent (6-of-11) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Yeshiva hit on 57.1 percent (32-of-56) from the floor, 50 percent (10-of-20) from beyond the arc and 74.1 percent (20-of-27) from the charity stripe.  Yeshiva won the boards battle, 35-28, while scoring nine second-chance points off eight offensive rebounds. The Maccabees outplayed the Panthers in assists (20-14), blocks (3-1), bench points (16-5) and points in the paint (44-32) while scoring 13 points off 12 miscues.  Old Westbury held the edge in and steals (10-8) and fastbreak points (13-12).
