OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball outscored the Farmingdale State College Rams (3-4, 1-2 Skyline) 26-10 in the fourth quarter to claim a 64-55 Skyline Conference home victory Tuesday evening inside Clark Athletic Center. With the win, the Panthers (3-3, 3-0 Skyline) improve to a 11-1 mark against the Rams dating back to the 2015-16 campaign.
Trailing 12-9 going into the second quarter,
Micah Browne knocked down a jumper at the 9:21 mark for Old Westbury to pull within one, 12-11. Jami Cardenas and Anna Zaborowska combined to score five-unanswered points to push Farmingdale State's lead to six, 17-11, with 8:06 left.
Phalan Smith's jumper ignited an 8-2 Panther run from 5:48 to 4:03 to knot the game at 19 before the Rams claimed the five-point lead (26-21) over the next 2:40.
Davida Warren laid in two with five seconds left in the quarter and sent the 26-23 game into the break.
Farmingdale State opened second-half play with a 12-6 spurt to extend its lead to a game-high nine points, 38-29, with 5:14 showing on the third-quarter clock. Old Westbury put together a 9-3 run from 4:46 to 2:03 capped by
Paige Brown's layup to trim the deficit to three, 41-38. The Rams then scored four-straight points in the remaining 1:24 to build the seven-point cushion, 45-38, heading into the final quarter.
Ashley Cattle scored all of her 12 points in the fourth quarter to headline Old Westbury's 16-8 run 5:28 into the stanza as the team regained the lead for good (54-53) since being ahead 3-0 in the opening frame. Zara Witherspoon drained a pair of free throws at the 2:01 mark for the Rams to get in as close as three (58-55) before Warren and Browne score the game's final six points to settle the 64-55 final.
Warren led the way with 22 points (6-of-9 FT) and 21 rebounds (11 offensive) to post her fifth double-double of the season (25th career). Along with her 12 points (6-of-12 FG), Cattle added with eight rebounds (five offensive) and three steals to her statline. Smith tied her career-best 10 points (4-of-6 FG) while
Ja'nya Flash pulled down 10 rebounds. Browne dished out a career-high nine assists.
Cardenas finished with 17 points (6-of-12 FG, 5-of-9 3FG), six rebounds, three blocks and two steals to pace Farmingdale State. Nia Miller followed with 14 points and eight rebounds while Zaborowska nabbed game-high four steals.
Old Westbury finished the evening shooting 35.6 percent (26-of-73) from the field, 0 percent (0-of-8) from beyond the arc and 60 percent (12-of-20) from the free-throw line. Farmingdale State connected on 36.8 percent (21-of-57) from the floor, 36 percent (9-of-25) from three-point territory and 50 percent (4-of-8) from the charity stripe. Old Westbury won the boards battle, 58-31, scoring 18 second-chance points off 24 offensive rebounds. The Panthers outplayed Farmingdale State in assists (16-15), fastbreak points (16-10), bench points (12-10) and points in the paint (38-20). The Rams converted 20 Panther turnovers into 15 points and held the advantage in blocks (6-1). Both teams drew even with 10 steals apiece.
