@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball concludes season in Skyline semis

Old Westbury reached the Skyline Conference Championship semifinals for the fifth time in six seasons

MANHATTAN --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball started slow Friday afternoon and faced a double-digit deficit for the final 30:39 to fall 103-70 to the second-seeded Yeshiva University Maccabees (19-7) in the Skyline Conference Championship semifinals inside Max Stern Athletic Center.  The Panthers (16-11) are now 3-2 in the postseason against the defending Skyline champions dating back to the 2003-04 season and have lost the last four road games to the Maccabees.

Yeshiva jumped ahead 43 seconds in and never looked back as a layup from Gabriel Leifer gave the Maccabees the early lead.  With Old Westbury trailing 12-4, Alan McDonald and Pedro Marquez converted back-to-back buckets to pull the Panthers within four (12-8) at the 12:48 mark.  From there, Yeshiva went on an 18-3 scoring spree to go up 30-11 with 7:25 remaining in the period. Old Westbury fell behind by 26 (46-20) during a stretch of 9:42 that saw Panthers commit seven turnovers while shooting just 4-of-15 from the field.  The Maccabees landed eight first-half triples and closed out the final 5:06 with a 19-8 scoring edge to build the lead to 29 (55-26) at the break.

Old Westbury trailed by 20+ points for the final 24:50 and got as close as 22 (61-39) with a pair of McDonald free throws with 16:16 left.  Yeshiva outscored the Panthers by four (48-44) in the second half and took a game-high 37-point lead (98-61) with 5:03 showing on the clock.

McDonald finished with 23 points (9-of-19 FG) to lead Old Westbury.  Andrew Buskey scored 12 off the bench and Justin Alleyne-Washington followed with 11 points and a game-high three steals.  Marquez scored eight and Stanley Baker totaled eight points to go with a game-high two blocks. Shakirro Samuels added a career-high five assists.

Leifer finished with game highs of 31 points (12-of-18 FG, 7-of-10 3FG), 18 rebounds and seven assists to lead Yeshiva to its second-straight Skyline Conference Championship finals.  Ryan Turell followed with 29 points (9-of-15 FG, 10-of-12 FT) while Simcha Halpert contributed 16 points (6-of-10 FG, 4-of-8 3FG).

Old Westbury shot 34.2 percent (25-of-73) from the field, 19 percent (4-of-21) from three-point territory and 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from the free-throw line.  The Maccabees connected on 60.7 percent (37-of-61) from the floor, 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from beyond the arc and 81 percent (17-of-21) from the charity stripe.  Yeshiva won the boards battle, 43-31, while Old Westbury benefited from 16 offensive rebounds to score 13 second-chance points. The Panthers outplayed Yeshiva in steals (8-6) and fastbreak points (8-4) while scoring 18 points off 15 Maccabee turnovers.  Yeshiva held the edge in assists (24-13), blocks (3-2), bench points (17-11) and points in the paint (42-30).

Seniors McDonald (2017-19) and Stanley Baker both played their final game as a Panther.
