@OW_Panthers Softball rolls past Notre Dame for fifth-straight win

Old Westbury opens Skyline Conference play Saturday (Mar. 23) on the road against St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn)

BALTIMORE --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury softball opened their four-game road trip Wednesday with a 9-1 non-conference win over the Notre Dame of Maryland University Gators (1-2) Wednesday afternoon from CCBC Dundalk Field in Baltimore, Maryland.  The Panthers (5-2) held a 17-2 lead in game two before the game was called in the fourth inning due to darkness.

The Panthers struck first with five runs in the second inning off Gator starter Isa Carunungan (L, 0-1: 7 IP, 9 R, 6 ER, 10 H, 5 BB, 3 K) to put the game away.  Johanna Metz (1-for-3, RBI, 2 R, BB) opened the scoring with a one-out double to drive in Amelia Cariddi (2-for-4, RBI, 2 R, 2-2B). Old Westbury then doubled its advantage as Jessica Schwartz reached base on an error by second baseman Lucy Polvinale to score Metz for the game-winning run.  Schwartz, Lillian Chiauzzi (3-for-4, 2 RBI, R) and Nicole Baron (1-for-4, RBI, 2 R) all scored unearned runs to close out the frame.

Old Westbury added two runs in the fourth inning to make it a 7-0 game.  Amanda Neenan (1-for-2, 2 RBI) drove in Baron with a sacrifice fly, and two batters later, Cariddi slapped a two-out double to score Samantha Arcese (2-for-3, R, BB).

The Gators put one on the board in the fifth inning with Samantha Kastner's RBI double to score Naudiya Hopkins for the unearned run off Baron.

Chiauzzi closed out the scoring in the seventh with a two-run single to score Cariddi and Metz to secure Old Westbury's victory.

Baron (W, 4-1) logged her 16th-career complete game after retiring 12 batters on strikes while scattering five hits and two walks.

ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE (BROOKLYN) BEARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury opens Skyline Conference play Saturday (Mar. 23) with a 12 p.m. road doubleheader against the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (5-6, 2-0 Skyline) from Gil Hodges Field in Brooklyn.  The Panthers are 3-3 against St. Joseph's since the Bears joined the conference in 2016.
