Men’s Soccer scores early to secure 1-0 triumph over SUNY Potsdam

Old Westbury closes out its homestand Wednesday (Sept. 11) with a non-conference matchup versus SUNY Cobleskill

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's soccer scored early Friday afternoon to earn a hard fought 1-0 non-conference win over the visiting SUNY Potsdam Bears (2-1-1) from Panther Park.  With the win, the Panthers (1-2-0) move to a 1-2 mark against the Bears dating back to the 2012 campaign.

Old Westbury tested Potsdam goalie Conor Callan (2-1-1) early with a Grixon Moreira attempt that sailed wide 5:24 in.  Matt Thayer then found success in the box in the 21st minute after he finished Moreira's feed to register his first-career game-winning goal.  In the remaining 24:24 of the opening half, the Panthers' stifling defense held the Bears to zero first-half shots heading into intermission.

In efforts of breaking into the score column, Potsdam took five shots, including an on-target attempt courtesy of Colin Zieske in the 50th minute, before settling the 1-0 final.

James Perciballi (1-2-0) made one save to claim his first-career shutout win as Callan stopped one shot in defeat for the Bears.

Old Westbury outplayed Potsdam in shots (6-5), shots on goal (2-1) while the Bears held the edge in corner kicks (6-4).
