Wingate shines in Men’s Basketball Skyline win against defending champs Farmingdale State

Old Westbury travels to Riverdale, New York Tuesday (Jan. 14) for a Skyline Conference showdown against College of Mount Saint Vincent

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.comSUNY Old Westbury men's basketball held a double-digit lead in the remaining 10:26 of the second half to capture a convincing 83-67 Skyline Conference home win Saturday afternoon against the defending champions Farmingdale State College Rams (6-7, 2-2 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center. With the win, the Panthers (7-6, 3-1 Skyline) improve to a 3-3 mark at home against the Rams since the 2014-15 season.

Farmingdale State started with a trio of three-pointers by Anthony Miller Jr. and Hunter Schenkel in the game's opening 3:13 to claim the early 9-3 lead. Over the next 4:36, both teams battled for the advantage where Old Westbury proved to be the aggressor by putting together a 19-4 run 11:51 from to 5:35, with Charles Wingate scoring eight of his 15 first-half points to help build the 13-point cushion (36-23).  The Rams responded with a 16-8 spurt during the span of 4:45, headlined by Schenkel's 11 points, to pull within five, 44-39, heading into intermission.

The Rams opened the second-half scoring with a much needed 10-3 run, capped by De'Shawn Todman's dunk at 14:50, to regain the brief two point lead (49-47).  Pedro Marquez sank a pair of free-throws to ignite a commanding 33-12 run from 14:12 to 1:24 to regain and extend Old Westbury's lead to a game-high 19 points, 80-61. Farmingdale State knocked down a pair of triples in the remaining 1:17 to settle the 83-67 final.

Wingate led all scorers with 24 points (10-of-13 FG, 3-of-5 3FG) to go along with four steals and three assists.  Justin Alleyne-Washington followed with 22 points (8-of-17 FG), seven rebounds, five steals (tied career-best) and two blocks. Marquez chipped in with 16 points (8-of-9 FT), five assists and two steals while Jordan Johnson-Rader poured in a personal-best 11 points.  Pierrce Perry swatted away a game-high four blocks and pulled down seven rebounds.

Ryan Kennedy finished with 15 points and five rebounds to pace Farmingdale State. Schenkel followed with 14 points (5-of-10 FG, 3-of-6 3FG). Jermaine Fraser contributed 11 points (4-of-9 FG) and seven rebounds while Miller Jr. scored 10 points and dished out a game-high eight assists.  Todman grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with a team-leading two blocks.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 46.8 percent (29-of-62) from the field, 32 percent (8-of-25) from three-point territory and 68 percent (17-of-25) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Farmingdale State connected on 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the floor, 30.3 percent (10-of-33) from beyond the arc and 53.8 (7-of-13) from the charity stripe. Farmingdale State won the boards battle, 48-32, while scoring 15 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers outplayed Farmingdale State in blocks (6-4), steals (13-1), points in the paint (34-28), and fastbreak points (28-10) while scoring 28 points off 22 Ram turnovers. The Rams held the edge in assists (18-11) and bench points (9-5).

Old Westbury hits the road Tuesday (Jan. 14) for a Skyline Conference showdown against the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins at 8 p.m. inside Peter Jay Sharp Center in Riverdale, New York. The Panthers will enter Tuesday's matchup 10-5 against the Dolphins since the 2012-13 season.
