OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball dropped a 61-36 Skyline Conference home decision to the Manhattanville College Valiants (12-1, 8-1 Skyline) Tuesday evening inside Clark Athletic Center. The setback moves Old Westbury to a 5-9 overall mark and 5-4 in league play.
Trailing 18-13 after 10:13 of play, La'Niya Clark sank a free-throw at 9:17 that ignited a commanding 15-3 run for Old Westbury to claim a team-high seven-point lead, 28-21, with 3:14 remaining in the second quarter. With 34 seconds left, Amanda Pemberton drained a freebie for Manhattanville to send the 30-25 game into the break.
Manhattanville opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run to regain the one possession lead (32-30) capped by Faith Johnson-Desilvia's layup with 6:04 left. Davida Warren knocked down a pair of free-throws to make it a 32-all game before the Valiants put together an 8-0 spurt from 4:01 to 47 seconds to retake the lead for good, 40-32. The Valiants outscored the Panthers 21-2 over 8:05 of the fourth stanza to extend its lead to a game-high 27 points, 61-34. Phalan Smith drained a jumper with four seconds remaining to settle the 61-36 final.
Micah Browne finished with 12 points (7-of-8 FT) and four rebounds while Warren followed with a game-high 16 rebounds (nine offensive) to go along with three steals to pace Old Westbury.
Spencer Shore led all scorers with 18 points (7-of-13 FG, 4-of-9 3FG) and five rebounds to lead the Valiants to victory. Johnson-Desilvia contributed 14 points (7-of-10 FT) and three steals while Sarah Coutu chipped in with 11 points (4-of-4 FT) and a game-high six steals.
In the end, Old Westbury finished the evening shooting 19.3 percent (11-of-57) from the field, 16.7 percent (2-of-12) from three-point territory and 85.7 percent (12-of-14) from the free-throw line. Manhattanville connected on 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the field, 40 percent (6-of-15) from beyond the arc and 71.4 percent (15-of-21) from the charity stripe. The Panthers won the boards battle, 41-38, while scoring 13 second-chance points off 21 offensive rebounds. Manhattanville outplayed Old Westbury in assists (15-3), blocks (3-2), steals (17-9), points in the paint (22-14) and bench points (17-4) and fastbreak points (12-8) while scoring 22 points off 28 Panther miscues.
