Trio of 24-point scorers lead Men’s Basketball to Skyline road triumph at Sarah Lawrence

Old Westbury returns to campus Wednesday (Jan. 8) for a Skyline Conference matchup against St. Joseph’s (L.I.)

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.comSUNY Old Westbury men's basketball scored 39 second-half points to open the 2020 year with an 83-71 Skyline Conference road win Monday evening against the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons (4-6, 0-1 Skyline) inside Campbell Sports Center in Bronxville, New York.  The Panthers (5-6, 1-1 Skyline) improve to 10-0 since the Gryphons joined the Skyline Conference in 2014-15.

Enike Anyia laid in two points at the 19:23 mark to kickstart an 11-4 run for Sarah Lawrence. Shooting an impressive 56 percent (14-of-25) from the field over the next 16:29, Old Westbury outscored Sarah Lawrence 40-32 headlined by Pedro Marquez 16 points to send the Panthers with the narrow 44-43 advantage into the break.

Marquez dished out one of his game-high nine assists to Pierrce Perry for a layup to ignite a 10-0 Panther run in the opening 2:38 of second-half play to extend the lead to double-digits, 54-43. Sarah Lawrence responded with a 15-9 run from 17:00 to 10:54 and was able to get in as close as five points (63-58) capped by BJ Sanders lay in. Justin Alleyne-Washington's layup at 7:22 started a 12-2 spurt to extend Old Westbury's lead to a game-high 16 points, 80-64. Omar Jamaleddine and Andrew Varoli combined for Sarah Lawrence's final seven points in the remaining 2:51 to settle the 83-71 final.

Charles Wingate finished with a career-best 24 points (8-of-19 FG, 4-of-10 3FG, 4-of-5 FT), six steals (game-high) and five assists to lead Old Westbury to victory. To go along with his nine assists, Marquez followed with a season-best 24 points (8-of-14 FG, 3-of-8 3FG, 5-of-6 FT). Allyene-Washington chipped in 24 points (9-of-18 FG, 6-of-8 FT), six rebounds, three steals and two blocks while Jordan Johnson-Rader pulled down a personal-best 10 rebounds.

Chris Torres finished with 21 points (8-of-15 FG, 5-of-10 3FG) and three steals off the bench to pace Sarah Lawrence. Jamaleddine contributed with 20 points, 11 rebounds (game-high) and five assists while Anyia added 10 points (4-of-8 FG). Sanders pulled down 10 rebounds (five offensive) and dished out five assists.

Old Westbury finished the evening shooting 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the field, 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from three-point territory and 71.4 percent (15-of-21) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Sarah Lawrence connected on 40.9 percent (27-of-66) from the floor, 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from long distance and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from the charity stripe. The Gryphons won the boards battle, 46-31, scoring 22 second-chance points off 21 offensive rebounds.  Sarah Lawrence outplayed Old Westbury in assists (21-19) and bench points (26-7). The Panthers held the edge in blocks (3-2), steals (14-7), fastbreak points (12-0), and points in the paint (40-32) while scoring 26 points off 20 Gryphon miscues.

Old Westbury returns to campus Wednesday (Jan. 8) for a Skyline Conference showdown against the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles (5-4, 0-1 Skyline) at 6 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center. The Panthers will enter Wednesday's matchup 12-3 versus St. Joseph's since the 2012-13 campaign.
