FARMINGDALE, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball captured a 73-59 Skyline Conference road triumph over the Farmingdale State College Rams (8-13, 6-11 Skyline) Tuesday evening inside Walter A. Lynch Sports Center in Farmingdale, New York. With the win and three games remaining in the regular season, Old Westbury (9-13, 9-8 Skyline) currently sits in sixth place in league standings.
Five seconds into the game, Alexis Antonacci knocked down a three-pointer for Farmingdale State's early 3-0 lead.
Ja'nya Flash laid in two at the 9:40 mark to ignite a 14-3 Old Westbury run to claim the 14-6 lead with 2:56 left. The Rams drained back-to-back triples to make it a four-point game (16-12) before the Panthers scored six-unanswered points over the remaining 1:56 of the opening quarter for the 22-12 lead. Zaria Witherspoon's layup at 6:57 pulled Farmingdale State within nine (26-17). Over the next 4:15,
Davida Warren sank a pair of free throws to kickstart a 10-3 for the Panthers to build the 16-point cushion, 36-20. With 55 seconds showing on the second-quarter clock, Antonacci scored two freebies to send the Rams trailing 39-27 heading into the break.
Old Westbury opened third-quarter play with a 7-2 to grow its lead to 17 points (46-27) capped by a Warren lay in with 6:57 left. Farmingdale State got in as close as eight (46-38) after a trio of triples during the span of 4:12. The Panthers then used a 14-3 from 2:55 to 14 seconds, headlined by
Micah Browne's six points, to extend the lead to a game-high 19 points (60-41) going into the final period. The Rams put together a 17-7 spurt over 6:29 fueled by behind Antonacci's 14 points to trim the deficit to single digits (67-58). With 2:45 remaining, Warren and
Ashley Cattle combined to score the Panthers' final six points to settle the 73-59 final.
Browne finished with 17 points (11-of-13 FT) in Old Westbury's victory.
La'Niya Clark followed with 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Flash chipped in 14 points (7-of-10 FG), 12 rebounds (six offensive) and two steals to post her fifth-career double-double. Warren added 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds to register her 36th-career double-double (16th on season) while Cattle poured in 10 points, nabbed three steals and swatted away two shots.
Antonacci led all scorers with 23 points (6-of-17 FG, 6-of-14 3FG, 5-of-6 FT), six rebounds and two steals to pace Farmingdale State. Anna Zaborowska contributed 11 points (3-of-6 3FG), 11 rebounds) and three steals.
Old Westbury finished the evening shooting 36.9 percent (24-of-65) from the field, 25 percent (3-of-12) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (22-of-33) from the free-throw line. Farmingdale State connected on 25.4 percent (18-of-71) from the floor, 39 percent (16-of-41) from three-point territory and 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from the charity stripe. Old Westbury won the boards battle, 58-44, scoring 26 second-chance points off 21 offensive rebounds. The Panthers outplayed Farmingdale State in blocks (4-3), points in the paint (40-4) and fastbreak points (11-7) while scoring 15 points off 19 Ram miscues. Farmingdale State held the advantage in assists (17-8) and bench points (13-4). Both teams drew even with nine steals apiece.
